Vexilar Basics

Hey-

By next year i want to purchase a vexilar, either the FL-18 pr the FL-8. I have never used a flasher, none of my buddies have one, so i was wondering if you could explain some of the basics. One question i have is that, I know that the jigs show up on the Vexilar. Waht if i am fishing like this?

O -Hole with Vexilar

O O - 2 Holes with lines in the water

Will the vex show both jigs on it? Please explain anything basic you would like, cause i no virtually nothing about Vexilars!

Thanks

-Jordan

it does come with a book that tells you the basics and shows them.as for the lines depending how close the holes yes it will show both lines.as for which 1 you want i would go with the fl 18 it has the split screen 1 side shows the bottom and the other side shows everything.which the fl-8 does not have the zoom.

It depends on what depth your fishing? Holes side by side in 10' of water may work but will reguire more gain, but in 20' or so you should be absolutely fine. If you remember the formula that from the bottom on the transducer in 10 of water with a 19 deg. transducer you will see a 3 to 3.5' circle off the bottom so if you fish 20' that circle that the transducer will read of the bottom will be 7' and so on... What I like to do in my Fish Trap when I'm fishing perch in 30 - 36' of water is run two hole rods where the two fishing poles wil be so they are about 2' apart on center and the middle hole which I would put about 6" back more than the the parallel fishing holes, that would be where my tranducer is. Set the transducer as close as you canto including cord touching the side of the hole in front of you but make sur your ducer is below the bottom of the ice. What I like to do in this situation because two rods are legal in NY is to have a flash spoon like a Hali or LA Knacker in the left hole to call them in and a small 3 mm YBD in the other if they don't like the spoon., you will have to experiment with your hole placement to achieve a comfort level for you and your guest. Hope that helps...

So 1/2 of the Fl-18 is just the bottom?

Left side of the flasher displays the bottom 6'

and the other half is the to the bottom?

The right side is the entire water column...

Is that come in handy alot?

I have a MarCum LX-5 and and have run the LX-3. The larger zoom is definitely something that once you have you won't want to give back. The zoom on the MarCums are the very best...

What you have to really tell us is what species do you like to fish for and what would be a max depth your fishing.. That would be a start.

I would like to know anything you guys got to say, casue i know virtually nothing about flashers.

Like someone mentioned before....I would look at the Vexilar HSOforum. There you will get a chance to read some informational articles and you can also watch some videos on each unit Vexilar makes. One thing is certain.....once you fish with the Vexilar.....you'll never fish without one again.

If you can $ wise go with the auto zoom. FL12,18,or 20. It defines the bottom hugging fish much better. I have a fl-18 I got a few years ago. Didn't know diddle about it and read the book and watched the video then went out the first couple times and couldn't figure it out. Apparently no fish went by and the next time I got into the fish and it was very evident and learned quickly then. Wouldn't leave home without it.

Bite the bullet go buy one and spend hundreds of hours in front of it. the basics will take 15 minutes, the science will take countless trips and targeting all species on all 3 basic lake types. Some one should start an advanced thread on the subject for all us freaks that go home with vexlar eyes.

Ol Lund, what helped me most was time with the unit. I read the book, and talked to people, but ya just got to sit in front of the thing and play with the buttons to really understand how awesome a flasher is.

I see you're in SW MN. So am I, and a lot of other good FM'ers. I have 2 flashers. If we ever hook up on the ice this winter I'll show ya what I know and if we're fishing together, you can use one of mine. One of my flashers has bottom zoom, the other one doesn't. Once we start hitting some fish that are hugging the bottom you will see why you want bottom zoom.

My e-mail is in my profile. Drop me a line. I'd be more than happy to spend some ice time showing ya the ropes.

(we lost some good info...)

Anyway, I run

o,@,o

The middle @ is the hole with the flasher in it so I can see two jigs.

Sometimes it's more like

..@..

O...O

Kind of triangle. Heater in one corner and lamp in the other corner. Flasher in hole at top of trianlge. The other two holes for lines.

When there's two of us

..O....O..

.@......@.

Two holes, flashers are usually closer in same hole as they actually would be in corner, while heater and lamp goes in between upper two holes.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
