Propane and Cold Weather

I am currently on Red Lake (since Thursday) using 20 lb tanks. I have two tanks connected with a regulator that will switch to the full one when the primary tank is empty. I have noticed that the regulator will be green when the tank is full but as the tank empties in the extreme cold the regulator will show red. I thought the tank was empty but actually had about 9 lbs left. I have a full tank ready to attach if the other two quit working even tho they are not empty. I believe the full tank works better because of the more heat it can absorb from more liquid in contact with the tank, Also when there is less liquid in the tank the temperature of the liquid will get colder, created buy the evaporation and as it gets colder, closer to -44, the slower it will boil and the less pressure. Look at your tanks in the summer, the fuller the tank the less condensation or ice buildup on the tank. When the tank is near empty you get a colder temperature and frost up to the level of the liquid. I have not put a full tank on since Friday and the current tanks will both be in red if I switch the primary lever from one tank to the other yet either one will provide enough pressure to heat, at least so far.

All I know is that on Sat morn I put my tank outside and my heater inside and the pressure would not stay up to keep the heater running.......new tank just purged and filled....put the heater and tank (20lb) in the truck for 10 minutes and put the tank out and heater in and it would slowly loose pressure so we brought the tank in the portable and didn't have another problem all day!! Ran perfect and stayed warmed...

I was working on a fairly full 20lber Sunday morning north of Aitkin. My thermometer was tapped out at below 22 and who knows how cold it was - but it was toasty in the fish house. Had to get up and pull in a few walleyes (small) but we were all working on the sleeping in thing!

Today I started the gas grill and the pressure seemed low. Mot a much flame. The frost line on the tank was over 1/3 full so I poured warm water on the take and it worked fine. Temperature was about 10 below and over 25 below during the night.

i was putting my propane tank outside for my buddy heater last weekend and one of the metal pieces got bent up and broke because it was soo cold and Gander thinks it was defective... luckily they are standing behind it but the gander in forest lake was all out of 12 foot hoses! \:\(

Im not good with all this technical talk about propane tanks but i usually just keep my tank inside if it is real cold..

Later,

Ryan

If you had your tank outside and running a hose you probably weren't getting enough propabe to the unit itself. What I like to do during these cold snaps is to stick the tank beside me in the sled and run the hose along the side of the house. It looks like its gonna warm up this weekend so we shouldn't be seeing any problems.

Were you using it in a tub?? The reason I ask this is I could not keep my buddy heater running in the tub but if I put it in front of me on the ice I could keep it running with no problem. I figured that the oxygen levels in the tub must have been low for some physics reason I can't explain!!

Keeping the big buddy heater running on high has always been an issue didnt matter 20 lb tank and nice days still wouldnt run for long on high I have since switched over to the quick disconnect fittings A major change!! ran on high all day no issues with a 5 lb tank! and by the end of the day it was 18 below the tank fittings just didnt supply enough vapor to run both those regulators inside the unit

This read will drive you nuts. Pressure. Boiling point. I'm there.

So if things start to stop working it would seem you have two choices. Cut a bigger hole in the ice and stuff your tank down into the water as it is warmer than the outside - that is if it's below a -41 or whatever.

Second choice is to pee on the tank. If it doesn't warm it up enough you'll feel better for the ride home.

Just going to give my 2 cents. If your having propane tank problems- putting the tank inside the house with you is not a good idea. Even the smallest leak of a propane tank can cause a big explosion. Propane tanks are meant to be left outside side.

I will talk to the State Fire Marshall friend of Mine and see if he will give some input here.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
