Ice augers - Which one?

Coach

Recommended Posts

My dad runs a Jiffy, I run a Strikemaster, and my Buddy runs a Nils; there is no comparison. Unless you NEED a 10" hole, the Nils is by far the superior auger. Run one and you'll wonder why you ever thought drilling half a dozen holes was work, and THEN you'll put on the powerhead.

What we should be talking about is whether or not they should be legal.

the new jiffy stealth 2hp does have a primer...I just look at them in cabels in hoffman estates....I dont think it had a compression release on this year model

They should have both. The compression release is required by the EPA as an emmisions thing and the primer has been there as long as I can remember. I bought a new Jiffy 2hp 8" Stealth last year and mine has both. I actually had to get up and go out and look because you guys got me wondering.

I have a 2 hp stealth and it doesn't have a primer on it. It is old enough that it doesn't have the compression release either. Maybe I missed something, but I have yet to see a Jiffy 2 hp with a primer on it, but it might be not be a bad idea if they have one now.

I have never seen a Nils auger before but my question is, Can you reopen holes with this auger easily also? It sure sounds like one heck of an auger, I might have to get one!

Thanks for the info!!

Yep, you're right, no primer. You got me to go out to the shop and look, again. I bought a used Strikemaster 3hp 10" Cobra this summer, and it is yellow and black also, not quite as much yellow as the Jiffy, but anyway I was looking at the wrong auger. I actually had to dig out the Jiffy to look at it. The 2hp Jiffy's do not have a primer. I quess that was traded off for the compression release.

Windy,

I have reopened many holes with my Nils Auger and it works great! laugh.gif

As a rule I usually just cut a new hole because as stated, the Nils cuts thru ice like butter!

I do not like to reopen holes that other fishermen have left because you never know what they may have thrown into that hole! frown.gif

Cliff,

I usually don't move my permanent house very often that is why I was curious about the Nils reopening previously drilled holes. Thanks alot for the info Cliff, I appreciate it!

I have two Nils hand augers - got them both at the bargin cave at Cabelas.

I have owned a 6" Nils Hand auger for 3 years - unreal how fast you can cut a hole BY HAND. Last year bought an 8" Nils Hand auger - took it with on a trip to Upper Red in mid-feb just for fun. Turns out it was a good move because both power augers that we had with us went down with problems - pulled out the 8" Nils and drilled a total of 16 holes in 38" of ice BY HAND. The last few inches were a little work just cause you had to bend way over or get down on your knees just due to ice thinkness, but still, none of the guys I was with could believe how well that thing cut.

Next weekend I plan on buying my first Nils power auger at the Ice Show - any guess what it will be?....yes, a Nils of course. No contest for me.

Coach, you've had a lot of replies but not a lot of answers to your question on electric augers. I had one about 15 years ago. Sold if after a season. Two things: 1. lugging the battery around was a drag and 2. Even with a full charge it did not seem to cut as vigorously as the gas augers. Perhaps technology has improved a lot since then but I would not go back to an electric.

Guys, I appreciate all of the posts, great help. I have one more question, looking at the StrikeMasters, what is the difference between the the Lazer and the Mag? Is it just he blades? Is it worth the extra price? Again, thanks for all of the help!!

Great choice. To answer your questions..... yes and yes. The Lazer and Mag use the same powerhead but the Lazer will cut much quicker with the dual blades than the single chipper blade on the Mag. IMO it is worth the upgrade. cool.gif

hey coach i've had a strikemaster laser mag ultra for about 5 years and had to return the first one i bought the 2nd time i used it and this one has been at d-rock 2 times since that the only reason i dont own a nils is i already sunk so much money into the one i have.i like to think i take care of my stuff so i dont beleve proper maintanance has anything to do with it.so if i had it all to do over again i would buy the nils.

Coach, the Lazer has the dual lazer blades and the Mag has the chipper blade. If I was you I'd get the Lazer because it cuts holes faster and easier. The bonus with Strikemaster is if you need any service work they really stand behind their products. My brother in law accidentally pulled his rope out way too far and the recoil broke. He didn't have his receipt and took it to Strikemaster and they fixed it for free.

You'll be very happy with either auger you get.

Good fishing,

Corey Bechtold

I love my nils master and it is hardly broken in but for anyone buying one I would encourage you to look into the Otter Ice Shield since the blade cover that comes with the Nils SUCKS. I think the best advice in this thread is buying a second set of blades or cutting head. I have not done that yet but I am gambling. Hopefully I won't be paying for Next Day Air shipping later on.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
