Deer ran at night

Saw lots of deer on the roads from 7:30 to 10:00 pm the last few nights...including some large bucks.

Saw a lot of them last night that survived yet another year!

4 freshy road kills on hwy 14 east this AM, all doe.

Friday night just before we got to the farm in Benson, we saw a dandy (140+) crossing between two plowed fields. Sunday night turning into my neighborhood we saw a big 6 pointer. Both between 9 and 10 pm.

I would really like to collect one of those big 6's. 18 inch spread, nice mass, and high point(?).

I know that this is a little off topic but i cant ever remember seeing many road kill bucks, they all seem to be does. Does anybody else notice this?

Actually alot of fawns and yearlings. I spose some of those bigger bodies may have HAD antlers on them.

usually the first person to see a roadkill buck takes the deer, or gets the hacksaw out. Saw a busted up 6 pointer last week, one day in the AM, went back that eve with the hacksaw and he had disappeared. 3 years ago, heading to deer camp day before opener, there was 5 cars pulled over, and a sheriff, I slowed way down and saw a huge racked buck, apparantly he pinballed off 2 cars and they were fighting over who got the deer, hence the sheriff.

My little siss smoked a large buck with her car, the farmer on the side of the road where it died wanted it, but the bow hunter who was chasing it on the other did too. She said it got a little out of hand and the sherrif had to get called. A smaller 8 got hit by my house this fall, I saw it at 7:00 a.m, came back at 8:00 to get the horns after calling the DNR and Sheriff Dept, and the head was gone, it happens a lot.

Was on my way to adoption class tonight, going down Stillwater Blvd. in Oakdale. Lady in front of me hit a doe. It did about three cart wheels about 6 feet in the air and landed on her head. I pulled over to make sure the lady was fine and checked out the doe. Blood coming out of the head was it. The lady asked if she should call it in and I said it would be a good idea. Driving home a couple of hours later it was sitting there. I called the coppers to see if I could get a tag for it. They were there in five minutes and gave me a tag. Guess I got my first deer this year one way or another

A friend of mine creamed a big 10 pointer on 169 north of Mankato last thursday. I hit a big 16 pointer, in late November a few years ago. Biggest rack I ever seen. That was by Shieldsville. I agree though, I think does get hit more.

I drive 30-40 minutes each way 6-7 times a week up Hwy. 61 and there are a lot of deer hit by cars. I'm not sure if more does get hit, but I agree with the above post about people taking racks off the bucks. At 70 MPH, it is hard to see the missing skull plate on the roadkills so almost all of them look like does in that situation.

True story.

Just over a hill on a road, two guys found a big deer on the road with a large rack. They stopped down the hill and went to take the horns off.

My sister-in-law comes over the hill and didn't see the hunters. They jump out of the way and she swerves, missing them...but hitting the dead deer. They rack is shattered into a million pieces.

I tease her that if her husband can't get the big buck and rack...no one will!

Who's ever called the law to get a fresh roadkill? I'm not talking mince meat from a semi but a pretty much intact deer that died from the blunt force of a car or truck and landed in the ditch? I almost thought about it the other day when I noticed a bid doe that wasn't there an hour before. Any tips or advice. I may have to consider calling the coppers to get a tag the next time I see one.

Here's another question about taking possession of road kill:

What if a guy maybe carries his caping knife, a pair of nitrile gloves and a plastic bag with him, uh, for whatever reason. He happens upon a "fresh" roadkill and decides to slit open the hide from the front shoulders down to the hind quarters. This might expose some undamaged backstraps that could easily be cut out and bagged.

Of course, I've just heard rumors that such things can happen.

Does taking possession of a small percentage of the whole animal require the same permit from law enforcement?

No, but seriously, my uncle's welder friend from WI welded a custom frame on the front of his truck just for going after deer. He will actually drive off the highway and chase deer down in the ditch.

Whoa. Just to be clear though, I'm talking about ones I didn't intentionally try to hit. Ones I saw or unfortunately and accidentally hit.

My wife hit a nice 8 pointer in 1999. Luckily I had a tarp in the back of the jeep for my duckhunting dogs. 2 guys stopped and helped her throw it it the back. I called the police office and went down and got a rodkill tag after I got off the phone with her. (You're supposed to call or get a tag before you take the deer.)

It had good meat, but damaged the front end and the driver's door. Now I have a nice set of rattle horns!
