tica reels

Scheels in Mankato has them in the winter. Why not Shimano? or even Okuma if you want a cheap reel like Tica. Every Tiac I have used feels like there is sand in it when they get cold. They feel great on the shelf until you get them out on ice.

Careful now... there is a HUGE cult following of Tica reel users on this site. Don't want you to upset the troops. J/K grin.gif

All of my ice fishing reels are currently Tica Cetus (SB500 & SS500) except for 2 Shimanos, which happen to be old 500 sized Spirex reels.

My personal opinion on Shimano is their reels are a tad too big for my "personal taste". Sedona & Sahara are available in a 750 size which is a larger reel than the Tica Cetus. If you want smaller in the Shimano line, you have to get a TX500. The Shimanos are great reels but my personal taste tends to not favor them on my ice rods.

Okuma does make some nice little reels too. The "Hardstone" series would work great on an ice rod.

I'm personally going to be picking up a few Abu Garcia Cardinals in the 100 series this year for ice fishing as well. They are nice little reels with tall spools which is very nice.

One thing everyone should do with their ice fishing reels is take the side cover plate off and remove the grease that comes from the factory. I try to swab out as much as I can with Q-tips and toothpicks. Once the grease is removed, I relube the gears with Quantum Hot Sauce. Most factory grease gets stiff in cold temperatures. Switching to Hot Sauce really helps.

We were just talking about that. We thought about targetting some of those monster gills. The crappie bite here is a gimmie and the eye's are starting to go. A Budy got three nice eye's tonight and one slime. I have to work tommarrow but Sunday the eye's are going to get hit hard. I will venture that way after the tipup eye bite slows down, to good to miss.

hanson: You said it you have to take the greese out. One of the owners of those told me to boil the reels for 5 min and then regreese them. DONT do that that guy is crazy. I shelled a reel in 5 min listening to the owner! I got a great deel on a few of those Cardinals you were talking about and used them all year on a couple rods and loved them. Have you tried the Jason Mitchell ice rods they are Awsome.

No Tica's here, nothing against them, never tried. I like the Daiwa Caprice reels, even though not being made anymore, still available on hsolist for 15 or 20 bucks, brand new they used to be $45. Hanson, I've six of the Cardinal 300's (new model), a few more bearing than the 100's and really nice reels, you should like the 100's a lot. I landed a 32" pike back in August on a St Croix UL spin rod, the reel held up great, and the drag was just screaming.

I use a lot of the LF500 and SS500 Cetus'. LF500 is great for perch and 28-inch or longer pannie rods. The SS500 goes on a lot of my walleye, catfish, and smallie rods.

I'm also a huge fan of the Shimano AX-ULS for pannie rods. All of my 24-inch and under pannie rods have a AX-ULS on it. Very inexpensive, yet performs very well. Might not have the instant anti-reverse, but to me that's not a big deal.

I like the drag and feel of the 750 series line of Shimano's, but in my opinion they are just a tad bit too heavy for some of my rods. For longer walleye rods and pike or lake trout rods they are nice to have. I'll even go with a 1500 series for some situations.

A lot of reel choices out there, and Tica definitely ranks high in my book for ice fishing...

Haven't tried them yet although I have a few on order. Up at the Mille Lacs Get-Together this weekend, Paul Waldowski had a couple 26" Perch rods and 28" Walleye rods from Jason Mitchell. This was my first chance to see and handle them and I was impressed. He had Cardinal 302s on the Walleye rods at that is how I'm going to rig mine. Sweet! These rods are definitely worth checking out!

I am going to show you the Mitchelle rods next time your in and you will be sold. I was wondering what was going to be your next toy and now I have it all figued out. 26" perch rod for you, and a 28" Walleye rod. These rods are awsome, I realy beat the heck out of one all last year and it never let me down(thanks Jason Mitchelle for getting them to me). Great ballance with most ice reels and it is one of the few rods I've owned that keep a tru action when loaded up with a fish on.

My recommendation is to buy Whatever Matt Johnson and Hanson have because they are COOL!!

Good recommendations though guys. Tica's are great for me.

Hanson - Got Clicker? I actually took my Baitcaster this summer while I was on the Red River for Cats and put my camera next to it and taped the Clicker noise and sent it to my Dial Tone and it actually works pretty good. Even if I have the music on in the vehicle I can always hear the CLICKER noise!!!

You and Rusty must have both done that 'cause Rusty's phone was ringing when I was with him and it was "click, click, click, click, click, click." grin.gif

We should try and get out after some cats next summer Bruce on the Red. I could find time. smile.gif Or heck, if you haven't done them through the ice yet on the Horseshoe Chain, come on down. We'll work the cut down Ice Busters for them finicky kitties. grin.gif

I was joking with Rusty and said "Wouldn't it be funny if a guy had a loud Fart on the ringer tone" and wouldn't you know 10 seconds later he was playing it! Leave it to Rusty!!! He must of had onions!

See ya at the shows,

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
