We have had some great cook outs on Upper Red that include steak frys and BBQ chicken......that is the great thing about Red is the food we end up eating.......we cook breakfast(eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, toast) and always are cooking pizzas......another thing we had that was good was hamburger helper precooked and warmed up....can't wait for the hard water season!!

You can't beat beer brats on the ice. Nice and warm, ez, and little to no garbage or tools needed. I know there have been arguments as to whether it's legal or not but nothing is better than a fish fry at the end of the day.

I believe the regs are, If there is a slot on the lake, you cannot eat any of the fish that have a slot on that lake.

Last year up on LOW we cooked up a great breakfast of eggs and fried potatoes. While cooking, my buddie said "Are you bobber fishing?"

I said "Yeah, Why?"

"Because your bobber is gone!"

That's when I caught the FAT 25" I have in my sig.

A friend of mine gave me some bacon wrapped venison stuffed with green peppers and onions. Grilled those out on LOW and they were awesome! We also had a sauger fish fry another night.

Some other things I ate out on the lakes this past year are your typical standard fare. Soups, Banquet Chicken, pizza's, fries, pot pies, and even fish sticks! wink.gif

Man, I cannot wait to get out again!

Last year we purchased one of Cabela's propane powered slow cookers, it worked great for boiling up brats, soups, chili,dips etc. It has a nice locking lid to prevent spills and was easy to operate. Throw a few beers in there with some brats and let it simmer!!! Nothing finer on the lake!!

Cooking on the ice! This is one thing that is over looked! To feel at home, one has to eat well. I have spent many weekends on Mille Lacs eating junk food and loacal store bought burgers and buns! This seems to lead to a lot more bathroom trips and disposing of bathroom matter.

But it is what makes a weekend on the ice a special event.

Microwave is key! But a couple burners makes breakfast a better event!

Nothing beets having to wake the wife up at 2:00 a.m. to take a picture of a nice walleye also! Both my boys were on the ice before they could walk. Good way to raise a good kid!

Cooking in a wheel house can be great. If you can power up a generator you'll have a lot more options. One must have is an electric skillet. They're great to use in the house or if you're in a cabin or hotel and don't have the best cooking options. You can cook any meal in them and they're great for frying up some shore lunch. Another great appliance at the end of a long day is the coffee maker. Nothing better than a hot mug of coffee with a little Baileys in there.

My Wife used to be a gourmet chef, and I've always been a good cook... So together we've invented some recipes...

One of my favorites is Rissotto, with Lobster Meat and sauteed Red Onion.

Rissotto is a short grain rice slowly simmered for over an hour...

So I'll just simmer it on the Propane or wood stove... Then at the end add some precooked Lobster meat. from some cheap lobster tails.. And sautee some onions.

More often then not though I'll simply make a stew or an ala king, or a hearty soup at home a day or two before... Then I'll vaccuum seal it and freeze it.

Then when the time comes to cook... I'll pour water into a pot... and essentially I just have a fancy boil in bag dinner.

I can spend an entire 3 day weekend living on the ice, eating like a king, and all I do is bring up a couple of bags of stew, rice, chicken broth and a pot.

I bring my weber with. I have cooked burgers, brats, steaks, chickens, turkeys, hams, pork loins, prime rib you name it in all kinds of conditions and no matter how cold. If there is is just a couple of us that's what the Smokey Joe is for. However I only ice fish 4-5 times a year so I make a big production out of it. Fishing, eating and drinking a few cold ones ( I like beer even better in the winter than the summer) with good friends is all what it is about for me. smile.gif

Oh ya nothing beats having fresh fish fryed up all golden brown after a hard day of fishing!

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
