Licence for portable

I know you need a licence for a permenant shack and have it attatched to the unit but a fellow fisherman was telling that you do not need one for a portable. He showed me that the regs say nothing about a portable.

It that true??

So for you guys that have traps or otter houses, where do you stick that nice shelter licenses on your portables?

This is what I've done: take an old used tide bottle (red so if it drops I can see on the ice) and cut to proportion to the size of the licenses. Then I just stick on the tide piece that I cut out and then put the piece in my window of the house. I haven't had any problems yet.

Was checked by CO Sat. I have had my portable for about 5 years, and I painted my name and address on with a can of spray paint and a stencil, when I bought it. . Looks pretty bad now but he was ok with it, as long as there was something there. I am going to print out a new one on the computer and laminate it then just attach it with safety pins, just in case the next CO is a little more strict.

I was out fishing Sunday, counted 11 permanent houses out on a local lake, and only 1 had a licence on it.And that was a local person. All the others were not local people, they must have there own rules huh???

Whats up with this?

from first hand experiance if you get caught with out a fish house license on a portable its a $60.00 ticket .some countys or officers may let it slide but its cheaper to get the $12.00 license then to get the 60.00 ticket . just my two cents

I miss those little aluminum tags with the little holes in the center for the screw. I still have my assortment of shapes and dates starting in 1979.

I think for permenant shacks, the name or dl # are for them to know who you are if your not there. For portables, I would just keep the license handy for them to look at. I suppose they could cry about not having your info plastered on your portable but I've never had a problem....They got my money.

Chemist, the safety pin is a great idea. Last year I actually used a couple of really strong magnets to hold it in place.

The trouble with putting the sticker on the portable is it invariably comes off.

Interesting that we have a report of the CO checking fishing licences but not shelter tags. Last year on Reno the CO checked my tags but never asked to see my fishing license.

i was told by a co freind that you dont need your name cause all the info id on the shelter license. I found attaching the license to a peice of cardboard and sliding it in the slot where you used to put your name works really great. if you have one that is.

One way that I have seen several times is taking your license and laminating it in clear plastic and run a small wire or twist tie through the plastic and either clip it to your zipper or pin it to the house. All the info can be seen through the plastic and it wouldn't get wet either. works good. <((((><

I cut a piece of cardboard a little bigger than the sticker license. Ran a piece of leader wire through one end and tied it off on the mesh on the side window of my Fish Trap II. New sticker for each season just goes over the old sticker, and since it's small, it just folds up fine when I collapse the trap. Took coupla minutes and was no hassle.

Since I'm a Wisconsin resident and up until this year Wisconsin made you put your name and address on houses in 3-inch letters, my info is on the back canvas of my trap in permanent magic marker, so that solves that problem.

I've done just about everything, but this works the best.Take a pc.of alum.about the size of a playing card,(1/8 thick)drill 5/16" hole at the top. Then pull the backing off your lis.& fold it around the alum.then bolt it to your zipper on your door.(outside)

That metal tag works great. I stopped using the plastic sleeve to slip anything in cause in a blow the thing would work its way out. This year I just sprayed the portable. Also, you only need the license on the fish house/portable while you are actually using it. They are checking for sure. That is one thing they can check without knocking smile.gif

I'm really surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. The new shelter tags are just like carcass tags for deer hunting. I always attach mine to my portable the same way I tag deer. Peel the backing off, fold it over a cable tie (aka "zip tie"), and stick the halves together. Then attach the tie to a zipper pull or whatever you want. If you have multiple shelters, you could use wire instead so you can undo it (you can undo cable ties too). Seems a lot easier than laminating or sticking it to something and then trying to attach it somehow.

Of course if I had a permanent house, I'd want it inside a window so it wouldn't "walk-off" on me.

Bigfoot, I know that if you have a more than 2 houses you only need to have on liscens and that is for the one in use. You could put a permanent out and than carry the tag with you to use on a portable on a different lake. As long as the tag is displayed on the house that is in use.

My Otter has a clear plastic sleeve sewn on the front. I just slide a piece of paper or tagboard in with the information.
As far as the DNR being sticklers, I've been with people that haven't had shelter tags or names on the front. They didn't even question it. All they wanted to check was our fishing licenses. Maybe we were just lucky!
