Scott M
Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on smoothbore slugs? Should I just ante up and buy the rifled barrel for $150? I don't know if I'll be hunting in shotgun country yet but I do have the option.I found one article with ballistics comparisons at the NRA HSOforum Slug Comparison Thanks for the help. TrophyEyes
Buy the Rifled barrel. I can shoot out to 200 yards comfortably. Just practice, because at long distances, you really are playing the drop of the bullet.
USPENAMC
there were supposed to be some new bullets. i think they came out last year that would make it seem like it was a bullet coming out of a rifled slug and its supposed to be more accurate than a regular smoothbore but dont know the name. huntnfish
I would go with the smooth bore if you aren't going to put a scope on it. I wasn't going to put a scope on my shotgun so I went with the smooth barrel and rifle sights. I was comfortable shooting as far a I wanted with open sight which was only out about to 80-100 yards. The slugs are also cheaper with the smoothbore and if you do some testing you can find one that shoots good out of your gun.
troutmaster
i shoot either brenneke slugs or winchester super X out of my smoothbore. They've killed lots of deer, Another good bullet that my buddy shoots out of his smoothbore would be a federal tru-ball slug.
96trigger
I second the rifled barrrel. I don't have a scope on my gun, but still like the accuracy at 75 yards (200 comfortably might be a stretch) I would agree with 150, I might have to try 200. Not as much drop or tumble to the slug. Don't feel like you have to buy the rifled barrel right now, you can wait until the time is right. You can kill deer just fine with a smoothbore, many people do every year. I have never heard anyone complain about owning a rifled barrel, just the price of slugs.
killerloop1
Go with the rifled,,, I shot a smooth bore in younger years, eventually just went to an old mod barrel shot even better,,, but once wise tried rifled,, and can now pound tacks!!!! woody1975
What choke should I put in our 20 gauge smooth bore for rifled slugs? The kids will only be shooting it for one year and then they graduate to a .243, so I don't want to buy a slug barrel. Thanks
Mr Special
I'ld recommend Imp Cyc or Cyc.I also prefer brenneke's. There's KO's are the best I've found for the price. Good luck
vister
just sample a bunch of rifled slugs. they are meant for smoothbore barrles, not rifled barrels. may not be as good as having a rifled barrel, but worth a try.
Gordie
I shoot a smooth bore 20 inch slug barrel 870 wingmaster it shoots 2 3/4 slugs only and brennike slugs have out performed most all others that I have tried and I do have a scope on this gun and I have taken deer out to 135yards without any hesatation and wouldnt be afraid to pull the trigger at 150 with it. Try and shoot as many differnt brands as you can and let the gun and ammo answer your question.
Whoaru99
Smoothbores with the slugs it likes really aren't too bad unless you have long shots all the time - long such as >100yd consistently. The Federal true balls are supposed to be good, as are the Remington buck hammers. But, like the previous poster said, you have to find the one your gun likes.Bench testing slugs sucks, but it's the only way.
