Kyle
So what is so great about the patternmaster choke? I hear people say that it is the best choke out there, and that its just great. I want to know what makes it different from any other choke that is on the market, what its qualities are, and why people like it. Im sure there are alot of people on this forum that use one so any info on the patternmaster would be great. Thanks
guppie
Pattermasters work great for long range shooting and even closer distances too. they make a short range, mid and a extended range tubes. I dont use one because most of my shots are inside of 35 yards and i dont feel the need to buy a $80 tube for that when factory modified works just fine for that range. I might get a mid range for later in the year when I shoot hevi steel at birds that flare quicker with thicker down but we'll see.
Down2Earth
I go hunting to Canada every year. I was the first of the 4 guys to buy one. Now we all have them. They would be sailing or just listening to the pellets bounce of the geese on the long shots. Mine would fall dead.
orangestew
Try the Primos Deadzone chokes I picked up the Decoy and the pass shooting choke for this season. Used the pass shooting choke for geese last weekend and was very happy. Knocked down every goose I shot at. Can't wait to try the Decoy choke for ducks. I guess the main reason I bought these chokes is so I wouldn't have to pull out a choke wrench if I needed to make a quick change. I did look at the pattern master also but wasn't willing to pay the price.
snowgoose
Hunter4lifeA pattern master restricts the wad from coming out of the barrel at the same time as the shot. That makes your shot come out in a string instead of spreading out like it would with say a modified choke in your gun. It does help with longer range shots. I have found it effective to about 60 yards on snows and 45 yards on Canadas. I would compare it to shooting a extra full choke with steel. As you probably already know you shouldn't shoot steel out of a normal full choke.Just so I don't get yelled at about sky blasting. I know my range that I can shoot. I have taken the time to pattern my guns with different loads and distances and feel very comfortable shooting at the ranges I do.Hope this helps a little. Kyle
So the patternmaster only comes in one size?
poutpro
Actually, the Patternmaster is supposed to decrease the shot string size, so more of the pellets hit the bird at the same time.

Kyle
I was gonna say, I would think if the choke tube delays the trajectory of the wad for a little bit, then the shot would escape quicker and thus spread out quicker. Im just wondering though, if the patternmaster is meant for extended long range shooting, why would anyone buy it. Most people i know shoot within 45yds, and no more than 50. Plus my experience has been that it is much harder to hit birds the tighter the choke gets. However, maybe this choke makes it easier to birds at long distances? Im still intrigued so if anyone can answer those questions for me that would be cool.
Down2Earth
IMHO if yor going to shoot birds 30 yards and in don't waste your money. But when I go hunting and shoot at the first one say 30 yards away...by the time I shoot the 3rd one it may be a lot longer shot. Especially when your buddy shoots the second one your where aiming at and you have to move to the third or fourth target. With this choke the days of sailing geese are pretty much gone. Out of the 350 geese the four of use shot in 5 days only 1 goose sailed. The rest come down like bricks.
bassman222
Still waiting for an explaination on how a PM can increase pellet energy.....
huntnfish
There is a guy in Fargo that custom makes a choke for long range shooting. There are a lot of people use them for snow geese in the spring when they are looking to get a little extra range. I have seen the chokes in action and they are impressive at long ranges. He also has a chart for which shells and loads pattern the best for it. It is around the same price as a patternmaster and it would be the only choke that I would buy if I wanted a tighter pattern. I have talked to him a couple times and he is a nice guy. I think the name is gun works or something like that.
Rost
I've written this before about the P.Master and I think it's worth repeating. The PM (or any ported choke for that matter) will make your gun a lot LOUDER! If you plan on hunting in close quarters such as a pit or laydown blinds stacked tight, your hunting buddies will hate'ya!
guppie
With a tighter pattern it is harder to hit a bird. but when you do, it dead! no sailing of birds that have just one pellet in them.

poutpro
PM doesnt increase pellet energy, but it makes more of the pellets hit the bird at one time because of the shortened shot string length.
skies
I just bought a 11-87 and put my patternmaster in it and did some testing with federals new balck cloud. At 30 yards in a 30" circle i had about 90-95% of my pattern. i was shooting 3" #4's. Ihave been using dead coytoye for goose hunting and i love it. but that is just my experenice with the patternmaster choke tube i would recomened one to anybody
Benny
Your wasting your money on the Black Cloud ammo if you shoot it through a PaternMaster or any other tube designed to slow a wad down by using a finger or a slitting action on the wad. I talked with Federal and PM on this and both say the wad s used in the BC ammo is designed to be shot out of standard smooth style choke tubes. The BC wads have 4 or 6 little pedals that spring out at the rear of the wad to slow the wad down and alow the shot string to stay together. If you shoot the BC wads through a restrictor type tube your going to shear off the pedals at the back of the wad and cause your wad to tumble or stay with the shot string. A BC wad has no frontal pedals either, it is a solid shot cup, the air foils in the back of the wad are what seperates the shot from the cup. If your getting any kind of pattern out of a PM tube with BC then I would have to say your darn lucky to do so. Benny
Huntin&Fishin
a friend shot black cloud out of a pattern master and the wad was wore down so bad ther was a large hole in the wad.
