had some guys set up on the roost that 200 birds were using for the last 4 months. all the geese left before daylight, none returned anywhere close all day. we werent the only guys in the area field hunting, but with the roost blown int was pathetic for everybody. we ended up pulling the spread at 11 this morning and put on a ton of miles today to get away from pressure; finally found field just before dark tonight so hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

Boy, sounds like you guys had some luck. I spent a day out yesterday and had 2 birds to show for it. One early in the morning (solo) and one right before sunset (solo). Went to a field in the morning, a lake in the evening. Kind of depressing....didn't hardly see any flocks on the horizon or hear any shooting. Saw plenty of doves and dropped a few of those. We probably should have just forgot about the geese and focused on teh doves this morning. Oh well, beats sitting around wishing you were hunting.

We had a much better day today, than yesterday.

Yesterday, we never got a flock close enough to deke in. Today, we had a pair land in the the middle of our spread right at dawn. A half hour later we had a group of about 15 come right in about 10 yards out and up, I blanked for the second time in a row crazy.gif. Followed by another group of about 20, about 15 minutes later, when the gods shined down on me and I got myself a double. Those were the last of the morning.

With 5 guys we got 10 geese and a beautiful morning out in the field.

I could get used to mornings like this! grin.gif

Yesterday..no geese but three doves. Today five geese..no doves. Yest...today...different spots...I think we will give today's spot another shot tomorrow. Anyone else notice some really high flying flocks heading south?!

Ya but I don't know if the ones I saw were flying south yet as of a miragtory stand point but more heading towards the refuge but really high and they definately knew where they were going!! I just can't get over the size of the flocks of mallards piling into the fields today and right in our face too. Several flocks of 5-30 mallards all morning long!! It was pretty sweet and got the blood pumpin!!

sat. morning we tried running some traffic...got 3 out of the only flock to come close and also got 13 doves for 3 guys

sunday we set up for geese but had none take a look, so we picked up early and went elsewhere for doves. 19 for 4 guys.

This morning we went to the same spot for doves and set up the dekes on some dead branches. Finished with 28 for 4 guys despite some lousy shooting.

Overall we've done worse on opening weekend so I'm pretty happy. Best part was introducing two first-timers to the sport and seeing them have a great time. The season only gets better as it goes along as far as I'm concerned so I'm just happy to be out there again!

Here's to the next 4 months!!! (raising my Mich. Golden)

Our group did fairly well this weekend. Shot 37 geese on sat. They wised up on sunday and we only managed 2, partially due to poor shooting. We also shot right aound 70 doves for the weekend, so all n all it was pretty darn good.

Sounds like very mixed results!

I was all over NW MN this weekend (not hunting) but definitely paying attention for birds and there were no geese around in numbers. A small flock here, a small flock there, but that was it. It would have been rare to see more than 15-18 geese together at once so they are still hanging out with their families.

Duck numbers were looking pretty good with lots of teal & woodies sitting in the ditches and sloughs but the geese were noticeably absent.

well alltogether we harvested 13. 10 saturday morning and 3 monday evening. sunday we set up on a pea field that a buddy of mine had been scouting couple days before opener and they were flying by there like crazy but yeah we got skunked! all the birds we saw got up off the roost and flew directly over town! talked to other people in the area and not much going on yet. heard birds flying already at 4 in the morning over town also on sunday morn. hopefully this weekend with the little cool snap comming through will activate some of these birds its been way to warm. all they want is water right now!

On labor day we got two birds and my eleven year old son shot his first goose that was the most awsome part of the whole weekend.Just the look on his face when me and my buddy started high fiveing him for the bird he just shot. We also had something really cool happen to us and its never happen to me before we were callin in some geese when all of a sudden three sandhill cranes drop right into the middle of our spread and the geese never did decoy and the cranes stuck around for about a 1/2 hour milling about and feeding. We still couldnt get geese to come to our decoys even with live confidnce decoys. But those cranes were really cool to watch.

We hunted wheat stubble North of Roosevelt along the shores of Lake of the Woods. Opening morning between four hunters we were done in a half and hour. Nuts! Sunday was slower but we still managed a few birds, we really had to lay down the law on the calls though!

Limits both days. Wish it would have been more than two of us on Sat. Sun nothing came back but everthing that came out of the north decoyed unreal, got our 15 by about 9. The cool temps this weekend will actually make it feel like hunting out there.
