Hail damage, what to look for

Got some golf ball sized hail at the house during last storm. Only one ding on the vehicles, though it's a biggie.

I noticed lots of shingle pebbles on the driveway/sidewalks after and should probaby go up and take a look.

Hail damage can look very different depending on the size and duration of the storm. Also, the type and age of your roof will affect what the 'hits' look like. Google composite roof hail damage and you'll find some examples.

Probably worth a call to your agent. The one dent in the car likely won't hit your deductible if it can be fixed with paintless dent removal techniques, but the roof certainly could.

My house was the victim of some serious hail a few years ago. Up on the roof I went to check things out. Everything looked fine to me. (I'm a boilermaker, not a roofing looker over expert guy)

Just to be sure I called my insurance dude. Boy howdy am I glad I called. The fella that came to look things over for Allstate told me to replace the whole house and garage roof. The damage was that bad, but very difficult to see if you didn't know what to look for. This roof wasn't even a year old. My $.02 is that if you have even the slightest doubt, make a call.

Yup, I see homeowners all over now with grins on their face thinkin' about their new fishing boat they'll buy with their insurance money for their roof and siding. confused.giftongue.gifconfused.gif

Call your agent and get an adjuster out. No big hurry, but notify them so it is confirmed. If all your neighbors get claims and you don't, there's a problem. If you have problems, get a contractor to help you, but don't sign any papers with them unless you know who they are. There are some slicksters out there trying to take advantage with their suit and tie and multiple crews of immigrants.

There are good and bad ins. companies and it changes from storm to storm.

Check your siding VERY carefully also. With leaves plastered against the north side of the house, we did'nt even notice until this morning that the vinyl siding had at least 5 chunks missing.

Also, is there any negotiating with insurance adjusters, or is it their way or the highway?

If you don't like what the adjuster says, call your agent or company and have them send another one out. Have done it on a few jobs because some are just plain ignorant and/or stupid.

If you had a storm with hail, you really don't have to do anything besides a phone call. The adjuster and contractor you hire will find the damage. We know what to look for.

Ins. companies are getting wise to alot in the last few years. Too many people pocketing money and either doing nothing or DIY'ers doing a sloppy job.

A good place to look is at anything on your house that is aluminum or plastic. Aluminum (fascia, vents, flashing)shows the most, especially if it is the cheaper stuff.
