KOTC Gathering Recap

DTro

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, wish I could have been at the gathering. Tyler, Crazyice, and I were on the Mississippi that weekend and by the looks of things we were in the wrong spot. We had a few smaller channels with the biggest coming in at around 9lbs. I would love to fish a get together before the end of the summer...better yet if it was in the Mankato area again.

You know it's funny. This event just ended and I'm already thinking of ideas for an end of the year event.

I would love to do it again, this time with a few things to spice it up (like we needed anymore of that).

Anyways, here's a thought. Hold it on a Sat sometime in Sept or the last weekend (getting pretty chilly then). We could award bonus pts for fish caught during the gathering to go towards the years totals. Kind of like the yearly bonus pts.

Top three for each specie of Cat

One fish of each specie entered per person

30

20

10

Gar

10

Turtle

5

Sheephead

5

Carp

5

Walleye

-5

Here's the kicker, the fish would HAVE to be caught at the gathering AND at the location of said gathering. This would insure no unfair advantages to the boat challenged and also an incentive to hang with the bunch and socialize. Might also lead to some fun times jockeying for the honey hole.

It would also give a chance to some of the teams with guys that weren't able to get out as much as previously thought.

Just thinking out loud here.

Any more thought on this Dtro?

I sure have.

Here are this issues involved.

1. If we have it truly at the end of the contest, we're talking end of Sept where it could be 90 and could be 35. Probably somewhere inbetween and very good chance of cooler nights. The weather doesn't bother me (heck, not a whole lot does). But it could be a problem.

2. If we do the bonus point deal, I would want at least one member from each team to represent their team. Not really fair otherwise. I could just drop that idea altogether I guess.

3. Hunting season. I don't hunt, but there are others that do I think. Could be a problem as well.

I'm really open to anything. We have BPCL on the 9/14 that's a Fri. We could double up again the next day, or have it on any other Sat in Sept. I know BlackSportsman threw out 9/8 already as available time for him. Works for me......

Also seeing as how the temps will be colder, I wouldn't mind starting it a bit earlier and maybe have a deadline of like midnight or something, not saying we couldn't stay out all night, but for bonus points only.

Thoughts?

I would give up a grouse hunting weekend for another get together.

The leaves do not drop untill Oct. any ways. It sucks when grouse are flushed and you can not follow them for more than 3-6 feet above ground.

I would not care if thee are Bonus points for a get together. If the fishing is at all like the last one, it would not matter anyways grin.gif.

I am going nutz, I have not been able to get out for over two weeks now because of family stuff. I figure I will get out once this week for some channels action up on Miss. North, but the flatties will have to wait until this weekend confused.gif

I'm all for a Get-Together, but...

Don't want to see the rules changed mid-season. No bonus points!

I do think you can take a lot of these suggestions Darren and parlay them into the rules for next year.

-I like the "need 5 pts to upgrade" rule for a number of reasons, one of them is it is a little bit of an equalizer. Not everyone can go out and catch the "fish of a lifetime" everytime out. It lets the fish once a week guys have an equal footing with the fish 4-5 times a week guys. I think it adds interest, it adds fun, and it creates competition.

-I also like the bonus point (for different species of fish) for the same reason. Set up a plan like May is biggest sheephead month, June is biggest carp month, July is biggest gar month, or something like that. In each of those months, an individual on each team is allowed to enter their biggest rough fish of the month.

-There should also be a Summer Gathering or 2 where bonus points are awarded somehow. I need to think about this more but folks should be rewarded for coming to the gathering.

I don't want to spin the topic into a "rules for next year" topic, but I think its only fair to those who signed up this year to leave the rules as they are, and agreed upon. Next year the rules can change and everyone will know what they are getting themselves into before they commit.

Sept seems like it's going to be a busy month, at least for myself. I'm always up for an impromptu gathering. Doesn't seem to be very many clamoring for this so I was reserved to let it die.

Dtro,

Next week, I will see if I can still walk the area I told you about! If it is possible (still should be). I will talk to you about something up this way. The channels are bitting hard now and they have gain some weight. The bar I know of could hold a good number of people and should still be walkable (a rare short walk with ample parking, legal parking).

The fall time up here is the best time of the year. The biggest channels I have seen caught up here is during fall.

I know a good sized front was moving in when we had our luck yesterday, but I think the cats know winter is coming soon and they bite hard.

I want to get out their one last time and I will let people know when I do it or if it is doable. I know with a large group of guys, someone is bound to get a monster channel.

Well, heading out door for some flat action, lawn is done and its time to go.

Good luck!

Anyone with a jet boat or power pro, would have a blast grin.gif I know the whole river and can get you on some killer spots that I can not get to with out a jet or john boat.
