Post June Morson reports here

Recommended Posts

Fishing was good on Saturday. We only fished for two hours but boated a bunch of fish. Didn't keep count but I know we drowned 3 doz. minnows. We worked break lines from 10-40ft and caught more than enough eaters. No big fish but we ate well. Back up in two weeks.

Wild Thing,

My report is accurate as of last Saturday. We were working breaklines north of Boomstick. You are by no means obligated to believe me. Although, the fish fry was spectacular. I'm out!!!

Oh, I believe you, I've just never heard of that this time of year. We're more likely to fish in 4 feet in June than 14 or 40... maybe the water is still too cold.

take care!

The only fish we found in 4 ft of water were smallies. Surface temp as 66 degrees. Seems a little warm for this early in the year to me. I think we're off to a strange year. On Saturday every point, reef and hump in Miles Bay had a boat on it. Most of the reports were good. I talked to a group that had fished what they called the "usual spots" and struggled to find fish. The only reason we fished where we did was to get away from the masses. We may have gotten lucky, but I'll take luck before skill any day.

Back up Fathers Day weekend. I'll post when I get back.

Heading up now into tornados, hail, wind and floods forecast for the area. Just so we don't get mayflys!

Will report back Tuesday when return.

Send help if you don't hear anything by then. Or at least send more minnows.

Wind, rain, rising lake, mayflys and walleyes on the reefs....

Wow, ain't anyone else fishing? Very few reports here.

Had tons of wind and rain Thursday-Saturday. The Lake is up just about a foot since pre-Memorial Day, which is still very low but much better for docking etc.

Fishing was slowish when we could get out Friday and Saturday, mutliple small rainstorms and 20 mph winds... I hate wind.... did pick up enuff for dinner in about 90 minutes of fishing.... jigs and minnows near current and a few on reefs... but hard or impossible to fish where we wanted to....

On Sunday afternoon things calmed down and temps hit 82 and the fishing was great. My absolute favorite reef fishing weather -- hot, calm and hazy.... Caught them on my favorite reef on bottom bouncers and spinners. Any color, as long as it was hammered gold.... biggest only 22'' but it's early...

couldnt' stay out long as 15-month-old got tired of eating cheerios and playing with minnows

skipped fishing on Monday and took 9-year-old on a canoe trip. Saw a deer drinking on shore from 50 feet, 3 otters, 4 GBherons and tons of ducks, pelicans, cormorants and turkey vultures... beautiful summer day, 86 and sunny and not much wind... I hate wind...

Mayflies started showing up on the cabin wall on Sunday and Monday, so the hex hatch is on....

Come on folks, who's out there?

WT, I'll be headed up in a week or so. I'll spend four days and three nights camping on an island up there. I'll report back when I'm done picking ticks and scratching skeeter bites.

Hey WT! I was gonna go up there this weekend and I dont know where dad got that I was coming up on Saturday. I told him I get home sat morning and dont think the wife woulda liked that if I took off fishing right away. My mom and my sister called me saturday morning ( woke me up both times) wondering when I was going to be there. I was like " hey I was driving all night and I need my beauty sleep. " My folks came over that evening and had some grub off the grill with us and I told dad I wanted to go up on Monday but then I called him sunday night and he said he had to take some people out so I thought well if you are gonna be gone I may as well just stay home. I had fun with the my boys, grilled some rooster and walleye and just kicked back and enjoyed the A/C inside. I already gave the war department heads up about the week of the 4th, I am gonna stay up there a couple days and get some fishing in whether it be with dad or you. Oh and maybe work on my tan at the same time. I did glance at my fishing poles hanging on the rod rack thinking they look better when they are bent with a fish on the other end. Oh yeah I did go wheeling the other day and put on about 38 miles. 3 more hauls and then a week off. Looking forward to it! Hope all is well. B-dude

Face it, you are whipped! Anyhow, you didn't miss much, the fishing was pretty slow saturday as it was really windy. But your dad never called on sunday or monday and the fishing got pretty good....

I left him a photo of the big walleye from March at his front sliding door, find out if he got it....

See you that Canada Day week, eh?!! We can all wet a line together...

Take care

P.S. Jasonk

We were canoeing near the Big Grassy, which is near our place. Lots of critters in that area, the islands out toward Pork Point, too... seems the wildlife is everywhere on that big lake!

My cousin and I used to canoe out from the cabin at Taylor Bay to Harbor Island - that was always fun. Anyways, we're heading up to Hanson Bay on Friday if the forecast is semi-decent. It's already been an intersting fishing year up there fishing deep early season - it's always interesting to see where they're at (or not at . . . ).

Miles bay area was really good Sunday and Monday with fish biting on minnows and leeches. We had a couple of 28 inchers come out of 20 fow (leech) but caught fish in 12 to 30 - depending on the day / time of day / weather.

So how did everyone do this past weekend? We found the walleyes shallow and deep over the weekend. We caught nice size, 16-24", up shallow, 6-10' in the sand and rip rap - and we caught a lot of 10-16" off the deep points and on the reefs in about 15-25'. Biggest walleye came in the shallows pitching a white jig and minnow. Caught the majority off jig and minnow and trolling spinners on the reefs, gold or silver, with minnows or Gulp crawlers.

We fished north and west of Manitou island area. Also caught some around the Rabbit area.

I'm heading up this weekend (tomorrow) for some fishing. I'm not to confident that I'll be able to find fish. We haven't had much luck with the usual spots the past few years and it's time to try out new ones. Any more info about Rabbit?

Thanks,

Tman

I'd stop imto Buena Vista or Mylies and get some bait. Either talk to Richard at BV or Justin at Mylies. It's generally a transition time of year, but we'll be starting this weekend where we caught fish last weekend and that was shorelines with sand/rip rap/weeds and deeper points that lead to deeper water. If they're not home, it's off to the reefs or islands with structure.

Around Rabbit, first try the south and east sides of the small island with the marker. There's usally a boat or two around there. Second, try the south (the side facing Morson) side of Rabbit point - which leads into a bay. I've caught fish there all year. Third, try the east side and the south point of the island across from Rabbit point. Fourth, on the north side of the island across from Rabbit, there's bay with a deep rock point that usually produces some eaters. Fifth, once you go around the north side of Rabbit, there's and even smaller island that produces fish here and there. None of these are secret spots, but I don't believe that I've never left that area w/out a few fish in the bucket.

You should make the trek to Miles Bay and if the winds OK try some of the reefs in the bigger water northwest of Manitou.

During the evening, fish the island and area right in front of our cabin. It's located just outside of Hansen Bay. There's a sunken point on the SW side that generally holds fish. Also fish around the two red bouy's. Jig and minnow.

Again, stop in at one of the two -or both, baitshops and they can help narrow down the search.

We are heading up July 19-22 and I am wondering what tactics are best this time of year. I know the area you speak of well , but I have never been up there that late in the season. I imagine the fish will be deeper, reefs, etc. Can deep diving cranks work in and around miles bay/Rabbit area?? We are staying at BV.

July 19-22 the fish should be on the reefs. I would head west from BV all the way to Dawson and work the reefs back. Another idea is to run west of the Painted Rock and work the reefs north of Big Island.

Shorelunch,

Great post. Always nice when a veteran can give some actual spots to fish. I have fished the sunken rock on the north side of rabbit point a few times and usually picked up a fish or two. As far as fishing the red markers outside of Hansen Bay, I have caught fish there but they are way too close to home. I thought a guy had to drive at least twenty minutes from home to catch fish.

I'll be up on this weekend and will post when I get back.

Correct, in a few weeks - and probably now, concentrate on the reefs between Manitou and Dawson. Also, don't overlook islands with structure - there's some nice ones on the way over there.

We fish in front of the cabin as little as possible. How fun is that . . . I only fish it when I have a 1/2 hr or so or when it comes down to desperate measures smirk.gif

The sunken island isn't so sunken these days - at least last week you could see it fairly well - but hopefully it continues to sink.
