power pro and snags

This is the first year I have used power pro (65#) for cats. Is there a good way to pull out of a snag or is it best to just cut the line? I noticed that if I started to pull hard the line would start to bite into to spool. Thanks in advance for the advice.

You can wrap your line around something then give it a pull. Usually I use my little orange bait net handle to get pulled out of snags. Also if your going to leave you can just float back over what you are snaged on and sometimes pull it out that way. Kyle B

Yep, take a large dowel, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch OD and maybe 2-3 inches long. Wrap that in elec tape. Now when you get snagged pull your line tight and wrap around the dowel a few times. Pull hard and presto. You'll either bring in a log, straighen your hook, or break off at the knot.

You really don't want to cut the line due to the cost of line and also leaving a trail PP for the next guy to catch.

Don't cut the line, just try and bust it off like the rest of mentioned.

I can't tell you how many times fishing the Red River I have snagged up only to pull in a ton of mono tangled in some branches. Fish seam to run into this stuff too, makes fighting an 8 pounder feel like a 20 pounder.

I wish more guys would try and snap it off rather than cut it off.

The only time I have ever lost entire rig was when I was in a deep hole by Lillydale. The hole is filled with rubble and would catch and stick. I will pull with gloves, untill line breaks. I never thought of the reason Hanson stated (which is good), but 65# PP is not cheap. If I can save a few yards, alls the better. I do love pulling things up with it though. I am waiting for that catch of a life time, like the one DTRO had with the trolling motor grin.gif.

Good idea's in this thread, on topic you only think about when out in field. cool.gif

I have one reel spooled with 100 lb PP. I have to wrap it around the dowel about 20 times or it will slip because it is so strong. Ive straigtnd 10/0 gami and 8/0 circles with that stuff. Also pulled up 25 lb anchors on occation! blush.gif

I use 65lb and 80lb power pro and got tired of having to replace them every season due to losing big chunks to snags, so this year I went to using 40lb mono big game leaders and haven't lost any line yet.

I thought it was the weight that was getting caught in the snags most of the time, in which case the leader type wouldn't matter. You guys have convinced me to give the 40 pound a shot, I don't like losing powerpro line chunks on snags.

I got 65# Power Pro on my Penn 320...been on there for two years. The only line I loose is the big tag when tying polomar knots. Seems like the line always breaks near the terminal end when I snagged up tho. PP sure is easy to work with. I got 30# Big game on the 7000 and thats some tuff stuff ... just gets all curly too fast. I've got an idea that may eliminate the twist once and for all...just got to try it.

I use a dropper for my weight tied with 20lb mono. I lose the weight but not the whole rig.

Rushing, are you using bank sinkers? I have been trying a modified 3 way with a 25lb mono dropper. Seems to make the bullies more active too! Im going to give her another test in a little bit.

Audemp,

I heard about your first trials with the 3-way rig blush.gif Sounded fun.

I think I will stick with the KISS method.

Yeah bank sinkers on a mod 3-way. I really don't like the no rolls.

Ryan, It was a new way of delivery of bullies to the flatheads. It could also be called chumming crazy.gifblush.gif

Once I figured out why I kept losing bullies I was able to cast out pretty acurate.

I tried it again tonight and the bullie on the three way was much more active than the normal slip rig.

Rushing- I have been using banks a lot they seem to avoid most snags that no-rolls find...at least where I shore fish from.
