Moving the opener or mothers day?

Just caught this article from the Trib.

Not sure if it will happen or not. Lots of debate I am sure.

No fish tale: Legislator wants to move opener ... or Mother's Day

No fish tale: Legislator suggests moving the date of the opener ... or Mother's Day.

If Mom is abandoned at home while Dad and the kids go fishing, will she feel better if it's not Mother's Day?

A Minnesota legislator said he thinks Mom might, and suggests swapping Mother's Day and Father's Day to avoid the annual clash with Minnesota's fishing opener.

Mother's Day often falls on opening weekend of fishing, as it did last weekend.

"Having Father's Day the same weekend as the fishing opener would make perfect sense," Sen. Satveer Chaudhary, DFL-Fridley, said Thursday.

Less tongue-in-cheek, Chaudhary floated the idea that the fishing season should open a week earlier to avoid Mother's Day. He also suggested cutting the walleye limit from six to four, because late-spawning fish might be vulnerable to overfishing.

"Now with effects of climate change, we are seeing some spawns happening earlier," he said. "I think that if we combine an earlier opener with a reduced walleye limit, we could make a sound biological move while resolving an all too common source of family tension."

State law requires the fishing season to open two Saturdays before Memorial Day weekend. Between 1990 and 2007, 13 openers clashed with Mother's Day.

Moms get no break in 2008 and 2009, either, when they again compete for attention ... with walleyes.

I think that government should worry about doing the things that government should do like fight crime, build roads and educate the kids; and let me decide how to honor my mother and the mother of my children.

I read that article and the questions that came to my mind is what about the mom's that are into fishing????? Maybe they like that Mother's day means a weekend of fishing with the family.....I believe it is another thing the legislature is wasting time on debating.....

Reading waaay too much into what was in the story. It said "tongue in cheek". He was KIDDING to make a point. His point was moving it to the week before MD. Now you can take your mother's out twice! It's a win-win. I say move it...better yet, get rid of it...but that's another post a few down. wink.gif

I will share with you now the secret of 'greeting card holiday' avoidance....

"(honey, mom, grand-ma, etc), if I can't show I love you more than one day a year, and the only day I do is based on the calendar, we've bigger issues than my going fishing..."

Works for Valentines, too. Pick some day out of no where, surprise whomever with flowers/card/dinner, etc. for a 'special love/thank you'. Then you've got a fighting chance of pulling off whatever on THE day. You do not likely get out of a hat-tip with flowers/card, but should be green lighted for the primary, errr, conflicting event.
