Fishing Reels

I just bought a custom rod build by Thorn Brothers. It is a GLX 6'3" 722. Titanium SIC guides. I am thinking of a a reel for it. I am really considering a Shimano Stella or Sustain 1000 series. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I guess I should also say this combo is just for jigging.

Thanks,

Mark

Wow a stella, I thought they were just for show!!! I would say its not worth the money. Put it in your hand or on your rod and make a choice. Its your money... I would say buy 2 reels @ $250 rather than 1 at $500.

Pflueger reels are tough to beat but I've also had good luck with some Mitchell and Shimano reels.

I have Shimano and Diawa reels that were mid priced reels 10 years ago. Now they are bubble packed reels, hanging on the bargain rack. The Shimano reel is almost as nice as the day I took it out of the box. I bought a Shimano reel a couple months ago, and I couldn't get the bail to lock back over. Took it back to the store, and found others with the same issue. These were Stradics, not the cheap ones. Not to put down Shimano, but I expected more from a $120 reel. I was about to buy some Presidents, when I found out about the Supremes coming out, so I waited. Well worth the wait IMO. 9 bearing magnesium bodied reel that weighs 7.4 oz for under $100. I'm starting to wonder if people are paying too much for the name when it comes to "Shimano"??

Thanks for the replies. I really haven't fished with anything but shimano reels. I will take a look at the others you all recommended. I just spent so much on the rod I figured I needed the most expensive reel to go with it.

I highly suggest looking into the Quantum Catalyst. I recently got 2 of them and they are some of the nicest reels I've seen. I have one on a St. Croix jigging rod and it is a very nice setup. They seem very good for the money.

I have 3 stradics, one newer and two about 6 years old. Have had no complaints with any of them. The two older ones are beat up bad and near retirement only after alot of hours of use. Bought my dad a Pflueger president last year and its a great reel. Im building a new rod now and will probably put one on it, or a supreme. Very pleased with any Pflueger products I have...

I just ordered a Pflueger Supreme spinning to match with a g loomis, bought a medalist last year and am very happy with it, the supreme looks to be an awesome reel. Also ordered a Daiwa Tierra...anyone use one of these yet? Looks like a nice reel, if the nodak walleyes cooperate I should be able to try em out this weekend.

I just got a couple Pflueger Supremes and some Medalists. Great reels, I highly recommend them. I also have a few Shimano Stradics and a Sustain. Can't go wrong with any of them, but I would look at those Pfluegers.

Aren't Pflueger reels made by Shakespeare? I was at Mills and the Pflueger Trion GX7 was clearly the same reel as the Shakespeare ? but the Shakespeare was a few bucks less. Both seemed like nice reels for the money.

The Shakespeare company has owned Pflueger reels since 1966.

It seams like no one likes Abu Garcia reels anymore. confused.gif

I've been running Ambassadeurs on my cat rods for a number of years and decided to switch my spinning reels to Cardinals this year. Joe's Sporting Goods had a heck of a deal on 500 Series Cardinals a few weeks back. They were on sale for $49.99 with a $10 mail in rebate bringing the final cost to $39.99. So far, I have been very, very pleased.

Abu is on the cutting edge I think. They are tryimg many more options than any other company. they do have some great products... thinking about pulling the trigger on the new reel that almost "indestructable", Thought it was very cool at the sports show. I forget the name, Mike from Joe's showed me all about it.

Abu Garcia makes quality reels that last. Years ago, I worked at a bait shop that did reel repair and cleaning. The service guy said that Abu Garcia was one of the best reels made and he very seldom ever had to repair any.

I looked at a few new Abu Garcia spinning reels the other day. I wish they came with a spare aluminum spool instead of a composit one.

I recelnty bought a couple of Scheels outfitter Guide series reels. I think they were around $80.00 or thereabouts. THey have a good drag system and smooth action. I used one crappie fishing last weekend just to get it wet. Kinda fun pulling pannies in with my 200 jigging combo.. LOL..

Also if you are just going to be jigging with that rod, all you need is a 100 size reel. No need for a 200,300. Save a few bucks and buy a 100.

I agree with Hanson on the Cardinal by Abu, good reel, I personally like Abu's drag system. The newest to my collection this year is very smooth spinner. And very hard to beat the price. I just bought (because of an incredible deal) Mitchell Avocet reels from the outlet store in Spirit Lake, regularly 50.00 reels for 17 with a 5 dollar mail in rebate. They cast wonderfully and seem very nice with the push button handle fold down for storage and travel and two barrels. I like them.

Abu Garcia makes some great reels. I have had a few T-1000s that have been my favorite walleye reels for several years. I wish they were still in production, but some of the new models look very nice.

My knees got weak and I purchased a Shimano Sustain paired with a Shimano Cruxial drop shot med light 6'8". Gonna drop shot presentation to those finicky walleyes.

I held the Stella and wow, the lightness of it is incredible...
