Motor Guide vs. Minnkota

Is their any reason that bass boats you see on tv all use Motor Guide trolling motors and walleye guys use Minnkota's?

Just curious....Any thoughts or preference between the two?

Most of the time bass guys are fishing in sponsor boat and Motor Guide is a big sponsor for B.A.S.S and alot of big tournament.

I think that Minnkota builds a great trolling motor for all types of fishing. When a Motor Guide doesnt. A Minnkota will go throw weeds alot better then Motor Guides will. Most guys down south (were bass fising is big) dont have weeds so dont have to worry about that.

I like how I can ram the Minnkota into a log or whatever and it will bend and snap back. I guess whatever Al Linder uses I use. Well except Lund, but that's a huge investment. And I want a River Pro

They both move the boat. Motor guide is a cheaper priced name... I have noticed no performance differences after using similar models from both brands. Nike vs reebok? Walleyes...bass..tarpon...the fish don't care. "Whatever trolls your boat" I guess.

Ill put my 109 motor guide up against any BowMount Minkota offers Also the pipoint Motorguides are very popular with the eye guys! I've whacked plenty of stuff with my motor and never bent the shaft either, just look at the 3 blade aluminum prop and you'll see what I mean

I didn't like my Motorguide at all. always got all full of weeds. I'm glad I switched to Minnkota!

The stock prop that comes with MG's does suck, but ya just take that off and get a aftermarket for weeds ninja something and I can go anywhere, they also have a 3 blade aluminum power prop which Agape was nice enough to put on mine and that thing is the cats meow! Brand loyalty for me = MK all the way. MK Maxxum 74, 24 volt system. Fish all day, pulls my Ranger anywhere I want to go. Thick and thin. Next boat will have the 101, 36 volt. I like the cable system -vs- the motorized style, one less thing to go wrong and cables I can replace myself if need be. I would recommend the recessed foot control for your front deck. Much easier on your body over the course of a long day.

Motor Guide vs. Minnkota is more of a North/South thing. There are very few Motor Guide repair shops for warranty in MN. I have owned both and have been happy with the quality. I'm sure there is a lot of brand loality in MN. for Minnkota because there are many places to have warranty work done.

I have a MG on my boat (factory package) and I stopped by the MG booth at the sportshow and told the rep about my problem with weeds. He told me MG came out with a new prop called the hydrilla hacker. He said it is better than the ninja blade. I guess this will be my last straw for MG. I hope they make one that will fit my trolling motor. If this prop doesn't work then I will switch to MK when the time is right ($$).

Motorguide is a major sponsor for B.A.S.S. and ESPN - so if you are watching their shows on Saturday, you're going to see lots of motorguides.

If you watch the FLW bass shows on FSN Sunday mornings you'll see mostly Minnkotas as they are a major sponsor of FLW.

I have used both brands and in my opinion the Motorguide footpedal is very uncomfortable. It is too steep so it is very difficult to use standing up.

I have one of the new Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb with the Universal Sonar and I love it...no more tangled or pinched transducer wires.

I have had better luck with the Minnkota's in vegetation. They are both good motors, but it really comes down to which side of the pedal do you want the "go" button on.

MG 75 lb Wireless is what I run. I bought a new Minnekota last year and the first time out the cable broke returned it and about the third time out with my second Minnekota I'm on Mille Lacs fishing smallies when my foot starts to feel hot, I look down and the foot pedals on fire! I switched to the MotorGuide (I put on Hydrilla Hacker) and have loved it.

I've owned both motors before. In my opinion, MK far outperforms MG in vegetation. Even with Ninja prop as mentioned above, the MK is far superior at keeping your boat moving through the weeds. In open water, I felt they were comparable.

I have a Motor Guide. Would anyone like to trade their Minnkota for it?? It works fine but not good in vegetation!! If you see someone out on the lake pulling his trolling motor up to get the weeds off of the prop, that'll be me. I've learned to live with it but the next boat (soon I hope) will have a MK on it.

Only time my minnkota 70lb - 24V- uni sonar has issues with weeds is when I'm deep into the milfoil and slop. But that comes with the territory.

I 2nd the receased floor for the cable driven foot control. I should've did that when I made my front deck, but I like how I can move the foot control around when I need to.

I've owned 3 Minnkotas and each one was great.

The first one was a hand control old school 40lb thrust. My buddy has it on his canoe now. It's prolly an early 90's model. The next one my buddy gave me that was a 50lb all terrain model with cable foot pedal. That thing was beat to death before I got it and still worked fine. It has been used so much that the rubber coating on the cable has a hole. (duct taped of course)That is over 10 years old and is retired now since I got the 70lb last year!

I had MG on two of my previous bass boats with several different props including the Ninja,never had any quality issues with any of them but the Minnkota on my current boat goes through the slop much better. I was sceptical of the claims but they hold true,Minnkota is a better motor for my type of fishing which is predominately bass.

I've been running Motor Guides for I can't remember how many years. I used the new Hydrilla Hacker prop last year for the first time and it go's thru everything- milfoil, maiden cane, dollar pads- everything.
