eyepatrol
Just wondering if anyone will have either of these two in your fishing arsenal this season. I was in Gander last night looking around and noticed them. Is the X Rap geared more towards bass/pike with the feathered tail on it, or would it work fine for walleyes too? I know I'll be picking up a few Minnow Raps here pretty soon. Just wondering if I should get some X Raps also.Thanks.
Rost
They look like nice baits and I have heard really good things about both of them. In fact, I have a buddy that swears by the x-rap for shallow walleyes. It's just too bad a guy has to take out his 401k to afford a few.
tgff009
I picked up a few x-raps last year. I used them primarily on a Canada trip. In my case, I was trolling in 8ft water along weed beds and picking up a lot of action. My only complaint is that I was losing a lot of fish at hook set. I would like to blame it on the fisherman but the only thing I could conclude is that the 'eyes' were hitting it from the side in between the hooks. I say this because I was also using shads & rattles and didn't lose a single fish on them. I would pick up a couple in your favorite color and give'em a try. fiskyknut
Minnow Raps are a darn good Walleye bait. That new XRap Saltwater diver is gonna get some serious time this summer when I'm trolling on the LOTW. It's a bit on the large size but I think it's gonna be deadly on these BIG Wally's we troll up pretty regular come summertime!!!fiskyknut
PerchJerker
I have some, have used them and caught some fish on them. Not my "go-to" baits though.
markkstanley
Xraps worked well this fall on Mille Lacs and I've used them on the Tonka and the river. They'll catch just about anything. Got some of the new deep Xraps to try out this summer. I trolled minnow raps on Tonka last fall. Good baits. Some nights they were the goto, other nights it was the HJs. Borch
The Xraps are a great late fall bait for shallow eyes. The have great action when trolled a very slow speeds.
Random guy
The X-raps got the boot. I do not want to stink things up but I was not very happy with the action of the bait, I had trouble keeping them "zoned" and they do not like turns, the dang things would flip over and go bonkers. I still like my good old #9 Shad rap.
gunflint
I think that the X-Raps weren't really made for trolling. They're more of a slash bait. They work great for casting in shallow water, particularly for smallies and northerns. I haven't had much luck with walleyes on them.
mrmanners
I have had some of my best luck on te x raps. I started using them last year in the spring and man did I catch a lot of walleyes, bass and northerns. The key I found was the rip rip pause then making sure to adjust that as I brought them in. From what I found they are not ment to be trolled with as they will go belly up. Also make sure to try a slow figure eight I caugh quite a few doing that. I know I picked up a few that are running deeper this year so I may be able to use them longer during the season.
markkstanley
You can troll them - slow speeds and do the rip pause. Don't let them just drag behind the boat. Cast them out and use the ame action as if you are reeling them back but don't reel. Majority of the hits will come as lure is paused. Jon was probably trolling at musky speeds like 5mph About 1mph to 1.5 mph so is just right.
Random guy
I wasn't trolling them, just trying to rip them along the reeds using my ten foot casting rod. I'm big on direction changes and the X-rap would not change course like Shad Rap will when I swing rod tip from one side to the other. I would swing the rod, give it a rip and would flip over and go into the reeds. Now the Shad raps whip sideways and dig in when I use them as a jerk bait. Mark next time I see you I give you a couple of my X raps...guess what color I made them.
Borch
I do troll them and haven't had the rolling issue. But due to their wide wobble I only use them at slow speed,(less than 2 mph). The walleyes do like them very much under those circumstances. They are definitely a situational bait though.
markkstanley
Jon is right. You can't use a walk the dog retrieve on the XRap. Think of the action more like an underwater popper and they'll work fine. A big direction change on every jerk is not going to work. And Jon I don't need any pink lures the tutu works just fine thank you.
eyepatrol
I appreciate all the feedback everyone's given. I did a little bit of shopping today (okay, spent a lot), and picked up some minnow raps, but passed on the x-raps this time. I'm not entirely sure if I'm sold on them yet, and if they are best used in th fall, then I'd probably be better off saving my money since hunting takes most of my time during the fall.Good info though! Random guy
Quote: And Jon I don't need any pink lures the tutu works just fine thank you. Dude I found PINK 4" grub tails that have a litle yellow flakes in them. It is on like Donkey Kong! By they way I was going to tell you when you are going full speed watch out for the Tutu, if flies up and blocks your view, you could run into something! slipperybob
I've replace my Husky Jerks with X Raps.
