Jim Moyer rods

I have been thinking about getting a new cat rod and was wondering who has used one of his rods and are they worth the extra clams?

Next question might be, what will the Moyer rod do that my King kat or Berkley glowstick wont.

There are lots of rods out there and to each his own. I have a couple of Jim's E-Cat rods and love um. I do plan on getting a Boss or two also...just planned on getting from Jim himself but haven't been able to schedule another trip with him (yet). That blue in my avatar is in Jim's boat...what a trip! grin.gif

I also like Gapen's Far North rods. Both rods should be available at the Sportshow.

Everything!

Those Moyer Boss rods are really nice! They are high quality, the action is nice, they "feel" good, and I would say are a little more sensitive. Its like comparing a Croix to an Ugly Stick IMO. Plus you own a rod designed by a catfish legend. smile.gif

A good live bait cattin' rod needs a sensitive, soft tip and these Moyers have it, along with a ton of backbone. Thats a hard combination to find in many rods.

I guess if you got the money, why not.

Since my King Kats worked well for me last year, I'll continue to use them for a while.

I can honestly say that there wasn't a time last year that I wish I would've had a rod that would've given me anything different.

Having said that, I'll probably put a few more bucks into rod/reel the next time I need a new one. cool.gif

Darren, thats what I am looking for. Being a newbie last year I wasnt sure if I was missing cats because of my equipment or inexpierence. I am willing to spend the extra if it is going to catch me more fish and that I am not just buying a spendy rod.

So, if I were to take the plunge and buy a new cat rod for channels, what size would I buy?

You probably weren't missing fish because of your rod, when they take it, they take it!! Especially when you are running a clicker. Once they take it, its usually operator error which causes a lost fish or a missed hookset.

The nice thing about a sensitive tip is you can watch your bait struggle and bounce around. It lets you know he's alive without having to pull it in and check on him. I think that is a really important part of a live bait rod. Its no use fishing when your bait is laying dead out there.

What kind of channel rod are you looking for?? Red River Channel Cats or the Channels we have down here? Looking for something that can run circle hooks well? Something you want to hold or something you want to put in a rod holder? Out of a boat or from shore?

Never thought catfishing was this technical did ya? smile.gif

Chris, this rod would be for channels here usually out of a rod holder with cut bait. Circle hooks more than likely.

As far as a Moyer for the Flatties, circle hooks with bullies and a rod holder in the famed Minnesota river. This rod will also get a workout for the Sturgeon this spring with a circle hook and a gob of crawlers

Both rods will be outfitted with Abu reels with clickers.

Thanks for the direction. smile.gif

Chris,here is what Iam thinking.

Flattie's and Sturgeon

Moyer-Boss JMBC4

7"-6" 20-40# line

1-5oz

with a ABU 6500 or 7000 with 65# Power Pro

Channels

Moyer-Boss JMBC2- medium

7'-6"

14-20#

1/2-2oz

with a Abu 6500 D5 along with 30# power pro

What do you think about those two combo's?

Sounds like a nice setup......those are the two Boss's I have. grin.gif

You could get by with the Boss 3 also for your Flatty/Sturgeon combo I think the softer tip of the Boss 3 helps detect the Sturgeon bite a little better then the Boss 4, the Boss 3 has plenty of backbone and can easily handle Bigger fish so no worries their.

The Boss 1 would be an excellent Channel pole also and it makes for a good trolling rig if needed.

I'm using a Tekota 500 with the JMBC4 and an ABU 6600 with the JMBC2.

I'm very happy with both poles so far.

Looks good Tom.

If you want to check those rods out in person, Moore's Bait & Tackle in the Cities has them in stock. Although I can say I don't think you will be disappointed.

I would go with the 7000C3 Garcia on your flathead rod but that is my personal preference. Lower gear ratio, louder & tighter clicker, power handle, etc.

Tom-

I got to thinking last night about your channel cat rod.

You might want to check out Ugly Stick Ugly Cats. They used to be called Ugly Cat but now just say Catfish on the handle.

I have an 8' spinning and it is a really nice rod.

Another nice channel cat rod is the Storm Thunderstick Alaskan. I found mine at Mill's Fleet Farm. I've got the 8' casting rod. Mr. Special has a 8'6" spinning rod. They have a nice light tip and good backbone, plus, they're pretty cheap (~$25).

Mine likes to be called the "THUNDERCAT",

grin.gif

It has a very slow action tip, that works great for circle hooks. But it also has alot of backbone too. I landed

a few 50+" sturgeon, including my biggest 60" last fall, without any problems.

It's designed as a Salom trolling rod, so there made to take a beating.

Harvey Lee, There are "two" important features you should consider when looking for a rod that is capable of handling large kitties.

First and foremost, a good cat rod must offer plenty if lifting power. This is an all important feature for lifting big kitties off the bottom or out of snags. It's also a necessary feature when battling big kitties in heavy current situations.

I never found "sensitivity" to be an important feature in a cat rod. (Walleye rods...........that's a whole other matter). I prefer a medium action tip. It is important that the rod offers enough speed in the tip to have the capability of setting the hook with authority. The ability to set the hook hard and fast is very important.

Look for a rod that offers these two qualities and you have yourself a good cat rod. wink.gif

Well Said.

I concur.

Your King Kat is about perfect for channels. Flatheads too if you use circle hooks. But dont let that stop you from buying new fishing equipment. In the past 2 months I have bought a new reel Abu 7001i(with money from playing pull tabs) and a couple 300yrd spools of Power Pro. I am ready to hit the river!

Thanks for the info Chris. I'll have to stop in today (note time of post tongue.gif)and check them out.

I haven't seen these rods in person, and so correct me if I'm wrong, but the blanks are black?

I do really enjoy light colored blanks(at least the tip) for fishing in the dark, but I also really enjoy a well made rod. With the sensitive tip and nice backbone ramp-up, these sound like fabulous sturgeon rods.

You can fix that with a cheap roll of reflective tape from the automotive section at Walmart. Here's a buddy of mine with my Quantum Big Cat that I modified with reflective tape.

I have some glow sticks, I have just been too lazy (yeah, I can be real lazy) to break them out yet.

I like the reflective tape idea as well. Does that help even when your headlamp is off?

The reason I like white rods is because, under most conditions, I can see them in the dark even without shining a light on them.

If there is some ambient lighting, yes. I usually have a dim red LED headlmap on and the things glow really well!

Might want to check out the Surge rods. They're white and supposedly the cat's meow. I have heard that Moore's Bait will be getting some in.

After much studing of the cat gear out there I was going to buy another King Kat rod. Well, today I ordered a new Moyer Boss 3 rod and a new 6500c3 reel. I considered others but decided to go with this set up and figure it will get the job done. I also thought of taking my 6600D5 reel and putting it on the new rod as it worked out very well on the flatties and my 50" sturgeon last year. I also bought a 7000i and might put this reel on the new rod or one of the others.

Thats enough cat rods with 6 now. I think I have a sickness for fishing gear. confused.gif

I guess only time will tell.

I'm certainly not a professional...and was in the same school as the rest of you in saying sensitivity is not an issue with cats...until the otherday.

I tried out a St Croix Tidewater...yep.. a walleye trolling rod ...well, I guess it was really made for bone fishing. "Soft enough to cast a shrimp, but with enough backbone to land a grey ghost!".

By dragging the sinker on the bottom, I could tell the make up of the bottom and if there was leaves on the sinker/hook or if my cut bait was gone.

I'm talking about channel cat rod here...on the Red River, well that's another story. It's amazing what a person can feel with a good rod!

Of course this comes at a price too.

I have a Boss #3 and it's really treated me well!

Sounds like your set to go Tom.

I stopped by Moore's Bait today and picked up new Surge rod and a Black Catfish Trophy Collection 6500C3 reel with carbon fiber drag and power handle! Those Surge rods sure are nice.
