I am in class right now and I need a consumer report on a Vexilar. It would be nice if you would put in your two cents on the Vexilar. Could you please rate it 1-5. 1 being bad, 5 being awsome, and then give a reason of why you rated it how you did.

Thanks A Lot

I would rate my Vexilar as a 5. It is something that I have learned to rely on as one of my key factors in fish location. The days of drilling holes and wondering if there are any fish under you are over. Not only are you able to see the fish, I believe it highly increases your chances of catching them as well. I haven't had it happen to me yet, but I have a feeling that If I ever ended up with a vexilar battery dying on me while fishing, I would think very seriously about packing things up. You gotta love the Vex.

4.5 for performance, and a 3.5 for quality in contruction. My battery guages and charge indicator don't work very well and it can be annoying. It also occasionally goes hay wire, but then goes back to normal, which can be a pain when you are working a fish. No idea why. I have a FL-18, which I like a lot better than the FL-8.

Despite it's minor flaws, it is an invaluable piece of equipment. I couldn't ice fish without it. I also use it off of my bow mount trolling motor for open water season. I like the instant feedback on depth.

My Vex is an older model, but I wouldn't be without it and on a scale of 1-5 I'd give it a 5!

It is easy on the battery, it is a sensitive, well made piece of electronic equipment that has never failed me yet.

It enhances the fishing experience by giving the fisherman a broader perspective as to what is going on beneath his feet.

Depth, bottom content, fish, weeds, and pretty much the size of each. On the bottom, or suspended, it lets you know if you have company, then it is up to you to figure out how to invite the company for dinner!

It has been the saving grace of many a fishing trips, due to it's performance and the information that it gives.

Over the years, I've owned the FL8, FL8SLT, and the FL18. I've found the quality to be a 4.5. There have been issues with the range settings; I would have preferred closer spacing, since the deeper ones are useless to me. I've never needed depth settings past 60 feet.

As for company service, I have to give them 5++. Their service department has gone above and beyond to make sure I and my kin folk were satisfied. Would I buy one again? YES.

Ditto on the Vex a score of 5. I can honestly tell you if I ever forgot, say to LOW, or any other lake where going back home to get it was not an option I would spend $400 and buy antoher before I would fish without it. It not only tells me whats going on below me, but even if things are dead it's still something to stare at and help pass the time until i crank up the auger and move. Bill

Have had both an 8 an 18 wouldnt even consider fishing without! in winter invaluble for obvious reasons, summer perfect with trolling motor setup! very happy with quality service and will buy again if need be!! One of those companies that know what they are doing, Marcum another contender but Vex has the edge in M.O.Good luck

A 5 for me also. When you fish as much as I do in the winter from one end of the state to the other and alot of times getting drug over rough terrain in the back of my truck or Otter Sled- My Vexilar has taken a good beating over the years and still runs like Swiss watch every time!

Thanks for the help. The project isn't due untill Friday March 9. So the more replies I can get the better. The teacher couldn't believe I could go on a HSOforum and have people make a comsumer report for me. She gave me some bonus points for that. Thanks again. I would rate this site a 10 out of 5. (i hope my math teacher doesn't see this) grin.gif

I am new to ice fishing this year but even I did not leave home without a Vexilar. I bought the FL-12 and after seeing Matt Johnson's video showing the zoom feature by Marcum I have say it would be nice to have. The low power feature on the Vex is another way to get a different view but it only works in 20' or less. I agree that the 200' setting is a little useless for most people. Still I think the display is easier to see than the one on Marcum so I give Vex a 4.5.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
