Butts on the Ice

Or eat, bite by bite, the aluminum cans thrown out.

Or lick the oil drops from the bottom of their vehicle.

Or lick the gas that is spilled from power auger, etc...

All pollution is harmful.

A quicker decomposing butt stands to reason. I wonder why this hasn't happened. There should be a filter that decomposes quickly. (Not that the filters should be littered!)

Pointing the finger at other pollution doesn't justify your actions. You are saying there are other slobs out there so why can't you be one to?

It would be nice at a fishing web site where the people on it in theory gave a rats behind about the outdoors that they would take bettor care of our environment and not treat it as one big dump. GRRRRRR mad.gif

I did a seach on cigarette litter and found these stats. Pretty scary.

Ten things you should know about cigarette butt litter

1. Cigarette butt litter is the world’s greatest environmental litter problem

2. Globally, approximately 4.3 trillion cigarette butts are littered every year. Smokers in the USA account for over 250 billion cigarette butts, in the UK 200 tonnes of butts are discarded, and Australian smokers litter over 7 billion cigarette butts annually. In most Western countries cigarette butt litter accounts for around 50% of all litter.

3. Almost 1 in 3 cigarette butts end up as litter

4. Cigarette butt litter dramatically increases where indoor smoking bans are implemented.

5. In Australia, NSW smokers throw away enough butts to fill 7 Olympic swimming pools. Up to 350,000 butts end up in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria and waterways every day

6. It can take up to 12 years for a cigarette butt to break down

7. Cigarette butts can leach chemicals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic into our marine environment within an hour of contact with water

8. Cigarette butts have been found in the stomachs of fish, whales, birds and other marine animals which leads to ingestion of hazardous chemicals and digestive blockages

9. Smokers in many countries can be fined for flicking a lit cigarette

10. And the final and most important thing to know about cigarette butt litter is: Only smokers can stop cigarette butt litter. We need to educate them that butts are litter, and provide a positive alternative to littering.

I thought number 7 hit home with a lot of us.

****DUH**** nice attack on my post....read the facts on cigarette buts per the post above. aluminum cans dont leach any chemicals into the ground/water and can be turned in to a recycler for money is a heck of alot better than nasty cigarette butts laying everywhere that are next to immpossible to pick up plus they are nasty cause someone has been sucking on it before they flicked it,,,would you rather pick up a pop can or pick up a cigarette butt?

Ok, I smoke, and I don't normally or intentionally litter our outdoors. But it seems like most of the people that are responding to this topic are non-smokers. It all has to do with informing the people that do litter no matter what it is that it causes problems for all of us. Drive down any highway and check out the piles of trash that are collected by the people that volunteer for "Adopt a Highway" program. I understand it's not the same as throwing items into a lake but it is still relavent to pollution.

It is not only butts that cause problems it seems to be also "buttheads". Now I am going out to have a smoke, and will deposit my butt in an appropriate container.

Good day to all.

I ran through a car wash in St. Cloud yesterday and saw a little item...

It is an ashtry designed to fit inside a cupholder. The ashtray has a small hole...about the diamter of a cig where the but goes and it also says the butt will not smolder and give you that nasty stinky ashtray smell.

The price was 2.29...I think we can all afford one of these if we so choose to smoke.

Pretty small investment...throwing ANYTHING on the ice, water, ground whatever is not acceptable...so stop tongue.gif

Sutty, please e-read (or plain read) my post.

I don't litter intentionally at all. I don't know what you are referring to? confused.gif

And Kodiak, don't believe everything you google on the net. You may end up believing a lot of propaganda that is false. I am not saying you are wrong, but blindly believing is wrong. I do believe littering butts is a problem. So is littering cans and plastic bags and snuff. (Spitting in general is also a disgusting, germ spreading behavior.)

Good call, love to hunt.

Exactly, SemperFi.

There are many valid points on here, that is for certain. Cig butts and other trash being left on the ice or anywhere else besides the garbage can is definitely a good topic to bring up, discuss, make the public aware of. It's a problem, and we all realize that. But, lets not beat ourselves (us fellow members) up about it. We all on this site are good sportsman/sportswomen. We all know there are impacts to the environment when littering, fuel spills and other non-environmentally friendly acts occur. But there's no use in getting after each other's throats for things we (FM'ers) are all good stewards about, which is trying to keep our natural resources in as prestine condition as possible.

So let's focus on those who are not being good stewards of our natural resources. Be critical of those who violate the law, and not of those who respect the law such as our fellow FM family members.

(btw Pier, just so there's no misunderstanding, your post was next in line so I just clicked on it - not directing this post specifically at you)

That's my $0.02. Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season!

garbage was a topic last year, and i brought up the point that on the landings of most lakes they take the garbage cans away in the winter time. Why dont they leave some garbage cans out there in the winter time, that would cut a lot of the litter down. I would be more apt to pick up more of other peoples litter if i knew i could throw it away on the landing instead of dragging it all home to my trash.

On a similar subject...Does anyone know why some public access have garbage cans while others don't. I live in an area where there are many lakes that have nice government signs telling you about all the lake information and how important it is to check for milfoil ect, but I have come across too many times garbage sitting right next to the signs. I feel that if there were cans availiabe, it would rid of alot of the issues. But they still would need to bring the trash with them off the lake.

The reason for this is because the same slobs we are talking about use these trash cans to dump household waste, toxic waste(oil, fuel, ect) and all kinds of dump. we as the taxpayers who pay for these, suddenly will have to pay more for the pick-up/proper disposal, ect.

its too bad, there are A LOT of people out there that have absolutly no respect for anything.

McGurk, I lived in Colorado for a short time. I can't count the number of times I hiked way into what I thought was wilderness only to find an empty six-pack. It's never happened with me but for some, beer bottles actually become heavier as you empty them - to the point where they get to heavy to be carried. Reminds me of the miracle of submersion I once read about somewhere. You must fish close to me. We should get together and try to out-lie each other some time. I enjoy your wit. Best of Holidays!

I'll be up in your neck of woods this weekend to see my family, and up to fish Dead Lake early January. I'd be happy to buy you a beer if you get to Dent when we're there. Merry Christmas!

I took my young kids down to the LK Superior shore last summer to play on the beach. I was just sicken by the long line of cig butts that had washed in. I should of taken a pic. There could of been a thousand of them. I sure hope they wernt all from fisherman during the 3 day jaws tourney on the lake which ended a couple of days before confused.gif

Just yesterday I'm dropping my kid off at school and I watch a mother throw her just lit cig on the ground by the school door and walk in. This is a k-5 school and any kid could of grabbed it. mad.gif

I've done it, the butts on the ice. These posts have made me realize what I am doing. I now use the little plastic dishes that waxies and eurolarvea come in, it has a lid to keep the smell down. Very ironic, I hate the smell of extinguished cigs, yet I smoke, I think it is obvious that I'm an (Contact Us Please). NOT saying smokers are idiots. I can't think of one time that I have ever left, intentionally or unintentionally, other trash on the ice. I always just throw my trash in my portable sled and drag it back with me. Tonight walking out on Lake Waconia, passed a spot where there must have been 25-30 butts laying there, they were frozen in so I could not do anything about it, but it is disgusting. All we can do as sportsmen/women is clean up everything we can, weather it's ours or someone elses. Last thought, for those who smoke 20-30 cigs in an evening, how can you even breathe, and they must not be catching fish to have the time to puff away. I smoke less when I'm fishing than I do any other time. Hey, what a perfect quit smoking plan, sorry honey, can't leave the ice, I may want a smoke, it's therapy.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
