How soon before Ice

This year has been colder than normal. How long do you think it is going to be before we are out and which lakes seem to freeze earlier than others?

I'm as eager as the next guy to hit the ice, but why worry about when things will freeze up? it will happen when it happens....

The earliest I've actually been fishing was Dec 1st.....Well, I did do a little jigging in Nov 16th one year but it was only for a couple of minutes. Usually we have some good ice here (VT) by mid December.

Dec 1 2002...

Nov 16 2003...

Dec 18th 2004

I did not get out early season 2005. I hope I do better this season.

I believe it was 3 years ago now.

Upper Red Lake had 8" of ice out 2 1/2 miles at Roger's Campground with about 4-6" of snow on top Thanksgiving Weekend!

It could be coming quicker than we think!

Depending on how far you want to travel, i hear tell of 2" plus up in canada. But as for me, as well as probably many others the ice cannot come soon enough.

We are usually out the first week in December. This year it could be sooner since the water temps are already in the low 40s. Hopefully it doesnt warm up in November.

I saw a huge flock of gadwalls Thursday. Like 2500 birds. I have only seen that once before, 2000. You remember 2000, when there was safe ice Nov 16th. And it lasted until May. I`m not predicting, just saying that things could happen early. I shot a deer a few weeks ago that had at least an inch of fat on its belly. It was gross. And the smell in the pickup on the hour drive home.......

I do agree we should just hunt until the ice is safe. But we can always hope!

Hello,The ice is NEVER "safe" but as soon as it will support 250 lb dummy i will be on wakon or cove bays on the south shores of Millelacs........c63

Fished on 3-4 inches in 2002 on November 10th-12th did caught my first walleye of the year that day also. That was on a river. Was out on Thanksgiving weekend the same year on a bigger lake, did very well, got close to a 4 man limit of eyes.
