Pass it down as soon as you can, when he is old enough to read it himself, you are really going to miss it. I have been fighting my son since he was 4 for the use of the vex. he is 10 now. I had better get at the very least another FL8. The past couple of years, at times he likes to be on his own, I put him in a borrowed fish trap, typically no more than a rocks throw away, drill his holes give him a heater, (focus 5), bait, and somehow he always manages to con me out of the vex. He does not have to try very hard, I really love the fact that he is showing some independence, he picks the spot where he wants to go (within the original area that I have picked out wink.gif). The only times I hear from him is when there are fish showing, fish on, hungry, thirsty, or when he runs out of heat. I really need to buy him a fish trap and me a new vex. grin.gifgrin.gif

When he was 6 he wanted mine.

When he was 7 he was taking mine.

When he was 8 he figured out he has saved enough Christmas and Birthday money to buy his own.

Don't miss your opportunity to bequeath and upgrade.

If you are really strapped for cash, I would "share" the vex when he is out on the water. Yes, I know it is hard to sit there staring at your hole without knowing what is happening underneath you. But more importantly is if you are looking to have a long time partner for years to come, better to have him enjoy his experience then be miserable and watch you catch all the fish. The little guy will definately lose interest in a hurry- you'll be wishing you shared that vex!

Then when you know he'll stay on the ice and get the value out of a unit, that is the time to make an upgrade and give him your old unit!

Good Luck!
