Speed question

broncosguy711

Question

Dumb I am sure, but would like to learn. How is the top speed in MPH measured for a boats horse power? if someone is shopping and they are looking at a 80, 85, 90, 115 and 125 horse. what are the actual speed differences?

Thanks-

Many factors go into the actual speed of the boat. It can not only depend on the HP, but also prop selection, how the motor is trimmed out...etc. Generally yes, a larger motor = better speed or better whole shot. BIGGER THE BETTER grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

FYI- I have an Alumacraft Tourny Pro 175 (17'11") with an 88" beam, tiller. Boat's rated for 80hp, have a 75hp Merc on it. With just me, full tank, and all my fishing gear (3 batteries, 2 trolling motors, ect.) I max out around 37-38mph. I would imagine a 19' boat with that rating would be around that...

Were looking at the different sizes as hypothetical for different speeds. It is a Spectrum. not sure if that makes a difference for rating or not. I tried to get the rating thing earlier, but that went kind of south.

1998 Sylvan Adventurer 1600 (16'), 1998 Johnson 90 2-stroke, full tank of fuel, gear, my wife and myself. 43mph on calm water with GPS. Actually does better with two riders because I'm able to trim it just a bit more without porpoising.
