If you could only take 5 crankbaits fishing

Recommended Posts

What would they be?

Here are the ones I find myself using most often.

#5 Shadrap (chartruse/pearl)

#7 Shadrap (Crawdad)

Deep Thunderstick Jr. (firetiger)

#11 Husky Jerk (blue/crome)

Salmo Hornet (perch)

Lets hear your favorites!

Number one with a bullet is the Rapala Long Cast in Black and Silver. Absolutely Killer for Walleye, LM Bass, SM Bass, and Northern.

2. Rattlin' Rap - Black and Silver

3. Jointed Shad Rap - Crawdad

4. X-Rap - Deep Purple and silver

5. Northland Double Blade Spinnerbait - White

When I'm out fishing I have 6 poles rigged and ready so I can cast whatever I think the shoreline or depth warrants without re-tying as I troll. As a rule I like to have one shallow, one deep diving or sinking, one to pull through weeds, and one that is a good stop and pause slash bait. Sometimes it may only be for three casts to work a rock or a downed tree. These 5 I almost always have on. Good subject. I'm interested to see what others have to say.

Suspending baits are the BOMB for Walleyes!!!

There's nothing like stopping the boat, waiting a few seconds and then having a nice Walleye slam your bait. Their not your typical tappy tap bites, more like a Muskie slam!

Good fishing,

I can't really narrow down the colors because my favorite is whatever's working --- I have them all (or most of them anyway grin.gif) and I change a lot until I get dialed in. But with 5 baits I would take 3 bright colors (like firetiger, clown, chart/white, blue/white, blue/chrome, etc.), 1 perch, and 1 natural color (white or silver with some black or purple on it).

The five cranks I would take are:

Little Ripper - Pink Lemonade is an awesome color

#7 Shallow Shad Rap

#5 Shad Rap

#12 Husky Jerk

Reef Runner - for MN the bright / hot tiger patterns are good

I would take a...

#7 GSR Blue Minnow

#9 SR Hot Steel

#10 Deep Husky Jerk - Blue Minnow

#8 SR Bluegill

#8 SSR (Shallow Shad Rap) Walleye

These are all for walleye fishing in various situations. The first 3 I use in deep water either on a break/flat or over open water. The Bluegill I like using trolling over deep weeds and the Walleye seems to always be a big hit at night.

I also like to add a red hook to some of my lures. Sometimes you wouldn't think it makes a difference but when your fishing partner has the same lure on and you out fish him 6 fish to 1, your thinking that red hook has something to do with it! Haha

I am adding one new one to my arsenal...

Berkley Frenzy Firestick deep diver. I caught a few Walleyes on them along with a good Pike. They run great and rise slowly when paused. My friend tried other baits but mine was the one getting bit.

Good luck,

I'm just starting to get into using shad raps, so I don't have any favorites and I don't have very many, but if I had to choose, it would be:

#5 Shadrap Clown

#7 Shadrap Firetiger

Couple wally divers

Blue/chrome smithwick suspending rogue

Caught my first "big" walleye (29.5") using the blue/chrom Rogue while fishing from a dock at night. I like them because they're a great multi-species lure, as are most crankbaits I guess. smirk.gif But the Rogue has really done well for me in the past; a great twitch bait that will set there without rising or falling in the water column.

Favorite wading and boat casting plugs...

Smithwick Rattlin Roque

Challenger minnow

Rapala Husky Jerk size 10

Matzuo Walmart brand minnow

Yozuri Pins minnow

Combinations of blue, black and perch green tops and silver /chrome prism sides. I am gonna mess around with dressed trebles on the rears of em this season to see if it makes a diff. When I want a trophy wading I cant go wrong with a Smithwick Super Rogue clown pattern caught a 30" 10 pound and a 28" 8.75 pound walleye on consecutive casts at 2:30 a.m.,a few years back.. It will probably never happen again releasing two monsters back to back but I look forward to the day it will happen again. When they go deep, rattle traps, the key fishing these at night out of the boat is keeping the head lamp on and just as you get it to the boat watch out for the eyes behind it, sometimes they will smash it just as your getting ready to lift up for your next cast. There's no sweeter sound than a walleye slashing with a mouthful of (Cabela's 1/2 oz. rip-n-shad in the super shad pattern) rattle trap on the surface. Gives me a tingle just thinking about that sound.

Easiest just to say- I like them all.

Ok, that was the cop out. How about going this route. I like the Rogue's in Bone color. Rapalas in black/silver and firetiger. The Reefrunners in Rainbow Trout. Salmo in Hot Perch. It just depends on application for which model and color gets pulled from the box. The nice thing, we are not limited to 5. But, don't tell Ma I have more than 5...

I do like firetiger the best overall in an original rapala floater in #11 and #13 followed by Rapalas in SSR 5 and 7 and here goes number 5 (I just can't). This is painful. #5 eek, an original rapala floater #13 in Black/Silver. There you have it. I am going back to bed.

Tight Lines.
