Mad and upset

I fished Lake zumbro last night and decided to get my skill with the baitcaster up to par. I was casting a brand new chart chatterbait that I bought that afternoon. After about an hour of flawless casts with no "professional over run" I thought I was doing well. I made a cast and it caught for just a second and *pop* my 15 lb powerpro broke right at my knot sending my new chatterbait into 8 foot of dark water. Well ******* , ******, ********!

I'm scared now to put anything back on for fear of that happening and loosing another 8 bucks. AARGH. Maybe I should respool with 50lb powerpro and that would help prevent it? Well at least that led me to switch to trolling which helped me catch the only fish that evening - a 4 lb pike.

Sorry to hear that carl. i have had a few phantom breaks with power pro as well. All i can say is retie often. Carl when you fish zum on tuesday night you should enter in the bass tourneys out there. they are good time!!! sorry to hear about that sinking 8 dollar bill though. ike

thanks for the kind comments. i typically tie the uni knot or occasionally the palomar.

I suppose I should enter the bass tourneys. I fish for bass very well usually but i do very poor on lake zumbro. It is such a different body of water I never have any good lucky catching bass. Probably because I'm so oriented to shoreline fishing and have never developed good deepwater patern skills.

Carl the shallow water bite is there. I have learned alot just fishing the tourneys however. You force your self to produce and it is intense. My adrenaline ran the first hour of the first one i ever fished. So see you there next tuesday night???

Stick with the palomar. It can be a pain in the butt with bigger lures, but it is much stronger in PP. I did some testing this spring to find out what worked best, and the Uni slips everytime while the palomar does not.

like ralph said the only way to go is the palomar with braided but it does stink when you tie big lures.

as far as the tourneys go there is no HSOforum it is just all here say. You need some kind of way of keeping the fish alive (livewell, arerated cooler etc i think stringer are frowned upon) and a boat. We push off from fishermans in at about 5 and weigh in is at 9. Anyone is welcome pretty informal. cost is 20 bucks a boat and 100%payout. hope to see you and more there. ike

yup, that would be the only problem as i don't have a method of really keepking them alive. i normaly just cpr for bass. and if do fish for something i put it on a stringer or in a bucket. So i've never really got a live well system yet for the pontoon.

Definitely go up to at least 30lb. It never happens to me with that weight or higher. And use the Palomar like mentioned above.

I've snapped 50 lb also...Seems if ya get the right tangle, at the right time, it'll snapp most any line.... frown.gif

Wow, all this talk of 30-50 line. I have never spooled anything more the 10lb and never run into the break off. I have of course had my fair share of rats nets in my bail when not paying attention.

One line that casts nice IMO and is very strong in the Iron Silk. Like I said the highest I have went in 10lb. I like the ultra light for the battle. Keeping in mind I fish smallies 70 percent of the time and large mouth the rest and when I target large mouth I am more a of a dock guy. I like to be out early and hit all those old wooden docks with a senko or tube,

I've switched from braid to mono on any rod that I plan using a swivel, snap or any mechanical attaching device. I had too many lures fly off into the abis on backlashes. That braid has no give and your snap will just fly apart. Try 20 lb mono on that chatter bait. The chatter bait snap is only a 20 or 30lb anyway.

It could be worse, like a $12 muskie bait, jr jackpot, bulldog etc. When you turn loose a long cast with a long stick and a heavy bait there's a lot of stress on the rod and the knot. Reeds will fray an weakin braid a lot too.

Ever snap the top third of a rod loadin it up with a cast?

I haven't had a problem with lure's 1/2 oz or less though.

I've had those knots break and seen lures fly probably 75 yards. Just watchin the dinero fly ought into the drink.

Ya can't buy two doz nightcrawlers for $8.00 anymore. I swear lure's are cheaper than live bait now.

I use the single Uni-knot with braided and have never had a problem. Easier to tie once you've done it a few times.

More power to you, then, but I've tested them and I know that the palomar is much better on Power Pro. Might not make much of a difference on a 5 pound bass, but when I'm wrestling with a 40 pound flathead, I want the best knot that I can get.

10lb Iron silk is the same diameter as 40lb Power Pro. I don't see an advantage there, except maybe if you're looking for stretch in your line. Far greater chance of the fish breaking off with you're lure in its mouth, potentially dying later on. A lot more stress on the fish too after a long finesse fight as opposed to powering the fish in. I'm not trying to knock your style of fishing, just pointing out some reasons why so many people use 30-50lb Braids.

i've never really had problems with powerpro breaking on my spinning tackle its just when i cast (and I use that word loosely!) with a baitcaster and get catchets that stop the cast short that i've had it break.

Power pro is junk. Try a new braid and you'll have much better luck. I've termed PP as "the line that breaks when the wind blows". I hate loosing BIG fish and PP has cost me plenty. I still don't understand why it got so popular so fast. confused.gif

wow, i guess i've never really seen that attitude about it. I'd have to say I have never really had problems with it on my spinning reels. It is only after repeated catches on the baitcaster that i've had it break off on the light pound test.
