MNice
I tried some of this last year on my bait caster and am somewhat disappointed. Right now the line looks like barbed wire, there are frays all over. Could my guides be that worn out, or is this a normal situation? Thanks, jeff
0 slick814
I'd guess you either have guides that are cutting into it, or had a few backlashes that got picked at a few times? (We all get 'em...) You can usually use fireline for more than one year, as long as the color isn't faded, it's still good. At the advice of a professional fisherman, I don't change my fireline until it starts to fade. So, if it's getting frayed on the line, it's either been put through the ringer in the water, going through some major rocks, etc., or I'd say to check your guides on your rod, there might be one or two that have some kind of nick or edge in them. 0 Cliff Wagenbach
If the frays are in the whole line I would suspect your line guides. You may have a grooveed guide or a cracked guide.I have not found the loss of color,(fadeing), or slighty fuzzy line to really adversely effect line strength.I use Fireline or Power Pro on all of my walleye rods for every presentation and love them!I have had the same line on some of my rods for 3 years and still no problems. If you put a full spool of line on a reel, just wind it off that reel onto another reel the next year and you will be essentially using unused line again.Cliff
0 Rost
Try Power Pro or the new Stren Braided line. It doesn't fray and it casts like a dream! Also, I believe the knot strength is better as well. Give it a shot.
0 andy j
I agree with Rost, I used to be a Fireline guy but switched to PowerPro about 4 years ago and will not go back.
0 castindad
CLIFF AGAIN YOU ARE RIGHT ON. I HAVE USED FIRE LINE 14 -4 FOR GOING ON 5 YEARS WITH CRANKS AND IT IS LIKE NEW. BEST LINE ON THE MARKET. YOU MUST HOWEVER PUT SOME BACKIN FOR THE SPOOLOR IT MAY SLIPCAUSING BIG PROBLEMS CASTINDAD
0 Northlander
Try Power Pro its rounder and will cast better out of a baitcaster.
0 FL SNIPER
Glad to hear people like PowerPro...because I just put some on my baitcaster for the first time per the advice of a friend....is it possible he may actually know what he's talking about?!!? ....uh oh...I better not tell him that. 0 Duffman
Jeff,Check those guides and even the guide on the reel. Like others, I've also switched to PowerPro. It's spendy stuff, but it sure does last a while and works great on both spinning and casting reels. I still use mono in certain situations, but when it comes to braids, PowerPro all the way. 0 musky hunter
I always get the fuzzies with Fireline. As stated before, go to Power Pro next time you spool up, it doesn't seem to get them. But, oddly enough, the fuzzy line still seems to have much of it's strength. I can't remember losing a fish to Fireline breaking off.
0 walleye_dog
Yup, Power Pro for me too. Changed over before ice fishing season three years ago, then the open water stuff soon after. Great line, also you will notice it does'nt pick up as much water leaving the reel and your hands drier. A big plus while ice fishing.
