Are you using the same fuel from last year? Did you treat your fuel with Sta-Bil or similar product? If not it may have went bad.

Just a thought.

I thought 4 strokes were all fuel injected?

I am by no means an expert....but if I had to guess....

If you didnt put stablizer in the fuel and run the motor before you stored it...the gas might have gone bad crazy.gif. If that is the case, you will need to have the carbs cleaned, replace the fuel filter, empty the gas tank and start all over.

Also, not all 4-strokes are fuel injected.

you need to remove the carb or carbs and clean them out. you have gummed up carbs, which is very common. remove all jets and needles and clean then very good. just the slightest gunk will give you bad performance, and most times you can't even see the gunk.

i had less than half of a tank fron last season, and i put seafoam in and filled up with new gas , i only got to run it for a little bit, might not have given it enough time to work, had the family with me and the kids wanted to fish so thats what we did, should i try to run it out or bring it in and have it cleaned? this is a 2 stroke as originally posted not a 4

another possiblity is... i had a 50hp evinrude that had this same problem when i went to put hammer down she would only give me 3000 rpm..problem was a little plastic piece that when you put the hammer down it advances it to full throttle on the motor that piece broke... not aloowing it to advance..may not be your problem but it could be and i checked everything cleaned everything then took it in and marine guy checked everything before he saw what the problem was and then it was a 2.50 part to fix..so this is what could be the problem if you winterzed your gas ..

i am positive i didnt cross thread the plugs because i used the boat a few times last year after i changed them and all was fine then, thinking about trying to run it for a bit and see if the sea foam with do the trick

well i brought the boat in to the place that i bought it from here in town and they looked at it said it was 150% better and i went to get it, well they said the carbs werent gummed up but the "tuned it up" so after $130 bill plus what ever they charged my warranty i go straight to the lake and STILL the same problem!!! it ran a little bit better but wont plain out wont get to full speed it boggs down at full throttle. so i cllled them and brought it straight back, they said that theyll have to look into the carbs that there isnt mucj to these motors so WHAT the heck is the deal??? any experts out there have any thoughts i am a bit irritated with this!! ??????? mad.gif

I never winterize my boat and have never had any problems with it. Granted I use my boat alot. Late in the year and then early again. So my gas doesn't have alot of time to go bad. But it's definetly not a bad idea to winterize your boat before storage.

Any hoo, here's my take on your problem. First clean the carbs "Good"! If you have cleaned the carbs, have good plugs and your gas is o.k., then I would guess when they "tuned" your motor, they got the timing off? I don't know what kind of set-up they have, but motors that run great in the shop on muffs, won't always run the same when on the water. It needs to be tested or tuned with the RPM's up aways and with resistance, such as in a tank or out on the water.

To me it sounds like they may have fixed the original problem by cleaning the carbs and caused another by getting the timing off. Who knows, maybe they did a crappy job of cleaning your carbs the 1st time and need to do a better job! Just my 2-Cents, I could be wrong...It's happened before! grin.gif

I am wondering if these motor issues are not from the Lean/rich air flow into the carbs? used to have an 18 h.p. evinrude, depending on the air temperature and the temp of the water, this needed to be adjusted from time to time, found out through trial and error...Just a thought.

well it seems that shortly after i posted this and on my way to work they called my wife and said that they had fixed the problem seems they found dirt in the carbs which is kinda funny to me seeing that the first time they said it was fixed the person that supossedly fixed it said the carbs looked fine!! hmmmm well they told my wife that they took it out and ran it on the river and verified that it works so now its home where it belongs i wont beable to get it out for awhile because of working nights this week, know all i have to do is get the billing fixed seems they charged my twice for the same job mad.gif hopefully this will be all cleared up by the time i wake up .. thanks for all the ideas and all, if it was dirty carbs then it was probably from me not running it enough and lettin it sit, so ill have to make sure to tyr to keep it clean, what do you guys use in your gas to keep things clean??

I run seafoam all the time. I never know when the next time I will be using the boat. I like to think that I will be out every week but it does not always happen, this way if I am unable to get out for a month I do not have to worry about the gas.

I would throw a fit and not pay second charges, they were supposed to do this the first time there. With the money you spent you almost bought another motor....I wish I was closer I would have gone and pick it up for you....and tell them about it.

Anyway use seafoam on your gas it does help a lot, also if you can buy a small inline fuel filter it will stop the dirt from entering pump then carbs.

Yes there is. At least on J/E there is - I've checked it on mine, and unless I've been mixing oil for no good reason, it sure is a 2s outboard.

There is NO timing on 2 stroke outboards

well it looks like my wife got them to drop the 2nd charges which is great they tried to pull a bunch of dump on her but she stuck to her guns.. i dont believe ill be doing business with this outfit again. only thing is i might not beable to run the boat for about a week so i cant verify for my self that its all ok. if its not then i will be taking action against these people for business issues thanks for all the ideas , yea valv what in line filter would you recomend? where to put it cut the hose and splice it in there i suposse thanks

Thanks Tim! I have a 2 stroke Evinrude and it has "Timing". I know this, because I just had mine done. It might not be like a four stroke as far as timing, but it's there.

Anyways, I do agree with Valve as far as not paying for the second cleaning, But am glad you got the problem fixed. There isn't a bigger pain in the rear, than a motor that doesn't run correctly.
