Morel Hunting

Is anyone else getting the Morel fever like me? I think that this year we are going to find them way earlier than last year, especially with the long range weather forecast. Man, I can't wait! I have two new places that I have lined up too so this is going to be tough the next week or two!!

There are a few message boards out there where you can track which states and where in the states people are finding them. It appears they are starting to find them in central to southern Iowa. My father always hunts the 4th turkey season in Houston County, MN and we ALWAYS find a few small ones then on sunny southside slopes. That season starts the 27th! The time is coming....... grin.gifgrin.gif

I checked as well this weekend and found none, I think they are still a week or so away. I would say by next weekend it should be good to go, especially if we get some rain! Good luck all!

I used to live in MI, we found Morels around old Elm trees.

since I moved to MN I haven't found a single one.

I am up by Duluth, I also look over by Bayfield, does anyone know where I should be looking?

Do any of the veteran Morel Hunters out there have an idea of the timeframe of when the Morels start and when they are done? Seems like last year I waited 3 or 4 days after the Lilacs bloomed to start hunting, and found some that were already wilting over or getting moldy.

It depends on moisture and temperature. Last year I found most of mine about 1 week prior to the lilacs blooming. Then about the same time you said in your post they were about done. Mid to Late next week I'll start looking, but I'm guessing it will be about a week and a half before I start finding them.

I went and took a gander on Sat. at a spot I found some last yr. Nothing cooking yet, but I'm guessing it wont be long. I am finding some small poisonous ones in my yard though !

Were you out looking where I think you were?

I have the next week off, and will be giving the old elm woods to the south and west of where you deer hunt a good looking over for some morels.

I went down to our little honey hole yesterday and picked about 50 of them. There were quite a few already dried up a bit. Guessing the popped after the rain on thursday. This was on the s side of the metro. It doesnt sound like anyone else around is finding much but a few guys I talked to havnt been out yet. Most were in open areas also witch is a bit different for this spot.

I was down to Winona yesterday and stopped for gas and asked the guy if he was out looking. Said no lilocs blooming yet and will be a week or so. Dry too. Said him and his buddies got 50 lbs last year. Didn't like my joke about following him around, so he must be a true morel hunter. Seemed honest and leary about me. Man, one would think any day now. Good luck all

question for you morel hunters....I came upon about 20 of these guys this morning while I was out with my camera....they are about the size of a persons hand or fist..maybe 5-6 ounces or so in weight.....I think they are a type of morel(giant false morel or "snow morel") but again not entirely sure....anyone think they know what this species is?...I picked this one and put it on the birch tree for a decent photo.......(if they're edible..sure would be some nice eatin!) thanks grin.gif jonny
