lower unit

i have found some lower unit grease on the garage floor. it seems to be leaking out from right behind the prop. could this be a bad seal or something? it is a 1990 25 hp johnson. any help would be great.

Are you sure it's grease? It could be some black greasy stuff that will leak out the exhaust, and that's normal.

Is it black at all or is it clean oil? More than likely It's unburnt fuel "exaust" thawing and leaking.

pier is right! if it is black gunk, it is probably water/fuel/and crud. if it is oil, then

It could be unburnt fuel from a flooded carb or lower unit lube.

I would suggest taking it to a shop and have it tested.

They will put air pressure inside lower unit and check for leaks, also they vacuum test it.

If it's leaking lube it's definitely from the propshaft seal. Not bad to replace, but needs some special tools to remove bearing carrier.

If the oil has a skunky smell it is probably lower unit grease which means you probably have a bad seal. Fishing line wrapped behind the propeller is a big culprit for taking out seals!
