Big small mouth (PIC)

Nice fish, but interesting stats. I've caught and seen lots of 4lb'ers in the river and they are generally in the 20" range. Being from the river, they are also generally skinnier than lake Smallies. According to a fish weight calculator , a 23" Bass would have to have a girth of only 10" to be only 4.4lbs! I'm not questioning the guy's integrity or anything, just wondering why the fish is so light for a 23" long bass.

Nice fish but I also question if someone's scale needs to be recalibrated. A 23" bass could easily be up to 6, maybe even 7 lbs if it's well fed. I'd have guessed at least 5 lb. I've been reading so much about Loui Spray's "world record" muskie and all the experts think it was a little overexagerated, now we've got fishermen going the other way. You're an honest man Carl.

Maybe I am looking at the pict wrong.. but I do think its about a 4.5 lb fish..... I dont think its 23".. I have seen in my days quite a few different ways to measure a fish. A tape measure will always measure longer than a bump board. Mouth open longer than mouth closed by a long shot.. ect...

Looking at the pic's of the two fish on this thread, both are close in size weight wise but one was verified and one was not. Because the fish in both cases are held away from the body, one by a man and one by a boy, it's hard to judge from the photos which one is bigger. I too am agreeing with Dietz, the fish probably does not stretch out 23". If the measuring tape was one of those vynil ones that adhere to the inside of the boat, I've found that they are not all that accurate. The one I have almost got me in trouble over a slot size walleye, it was easily a half inch off, said the fish was longer than it really was. It might be that a combination of factors, bad tape, wiggling fish, etc. lead to thinking the fish was 23" when it was not. But it sure is fun to try to figure out the size of that nice bass there. I hope it is still swimming.

20"...what do I win?

BLB can't catch a 20" or larger smallmouth for the life of him. tongue.gif Of course, when he takes me out I catch one. I won't repeat the words he said to me that day....LOL

Ok, here's a good one because I have another picture of this fish on the measuring board for proof.

How long is this fish? All you fellow river rats that know this, do not answer! You'll ruin it!

Hawgtide appears to be about my size. The fishes nose appears at about armpit level, the tail at the belt line. On me, my ruler says that's about 17". Also, just looking at the proportions of the fish, it seems a little skinnier than some larger bass that I have seen. So I've got to stick to 17". Nice fish. Let's get some other guesses posted, I can't wait to see the "truth" photo.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
