Color of PowerPro Ice Line: bright blue?

coldmark

Recommended Posts

PowerPro Ice seems to be popular here so I order a spool for my jig poles. I was a bit surprised by the bright blue color. Is there any evidence to suggest that this line is invisible under water? I would think the "smoke" color of Fireline would be less visible, but I'm not a walleye. I suppose most guys use leaders anyway, hey?

I used it once without a leader when fishing with Matt Johnson. He severely schooled me, but that could be due to a host of other reasons grin.gif. I do think that especially finicky midwinter panfish have a problem with this and braids. I don't know how much of an issue the color is, but the profile in the water seems to stand out more, even if it is a thinner diameter.

I have a buddy that has had that blue line on 2 of his rigs for the past 2 years. I asked him about it a few days ago and he said he is going to change soon back to a mono or floro. Yes, he catches fish, but he also gets outfished alot and went on to explain how he thought the color of line might affect the negative pannies.

I personally have never tried it, but I'm one of those guys that sticks with what works.

Hmm. I bought this line this year, and caught a mess of perch and a large northern last weekend (same line, no leader!). It has no memory and remains super flexible in cold.

The thing I don't like about it or other braids is that they collect ice and transport lots of water all over your eyelets. In this area, I prefer mono. I liked the blue Trilene ice line I had on last year.

With the spring float technology out there now a person does not need to use the superbraids. The fluorocarbon coated monos have a very limited strech factor and are almost as sensitive as braids anyway. Using braids on pannies is about as exciting as squirrel hunting with a howitzer.

Squirrel hunting with a howitzer seems like it would be extremely effective though. You couldn't miss the squirrel and the explosion that follows is sure to knock something out of the sky.

You get your squirrel and probably a whole flock of sparrows all with one shot. Talk about efficent.

I bought the blue PowerPro this winter-actually got it as a bonus when I subscribed to MidWest Outdoors at the St Paul Show. I was concerned about the color, so tried using a black Magic Marker to help hide the last 12" of line. This PowerPro Ice Line seems to have a different coating on it than the stuff I am used to in the summer. The black MM seems to have worn off and the blue color is back! Oh well, I will hit it again.

To answer the last post...the reason I like PowerPro for my panfishing is that I use it on my spoon and Jigger rods. When I get hung up on brush I can usually pull it loose without losing the lure. I also have occasionally picked up a larger predator while searching for the panfish.

I bought some of this stuff for jigging last year put it on a spool and filled the extra with 6lb. trilene. I used the powerpro one trip on Mille lacs and havnt used it again. It sucked when fishing outside, and didnt really feel much more with it.

For open water braided lines are much more useful, in winter they just seem to be overkill.

For panfish, Crappie, Perch etc I use 3# mono usually. In deep water for perch there is nothing better than power pro and a mono or flouro leader tied on. IMO. Like others say its also nice to have when that big Northern comes by and takes your little offering for a ride. blush.gif

Turn its not a good outside line at all. If Im sitting out runnin and gunnin I will use it when not real cold but if it starts icing up I go mono. If your not noticing a difference in sensitivity with Power Pro, Fireline etc. than you either have way to much mono leader on on top of the PP or you need to take off your gloves because the difference is night and day as far as Im concerned, Especially in deeper waters.

I usually only tie on about a 3-6' shocker/leader of mono with either a small barrel swivel or a back to back uniknot. Depends on how deep Im fishing and wether I have a spoon on or a jig.

These superlines arent for everyone. Some people just cant give up their favorite mono and some are just old fashioned and stubborn. For pannies dont waste your time or money but for bigger and deeper running fish its well worth the cost in my opinion. Its awesome for jigging in current!

Sorry Tom, but dayum, that is a funny analogy! grin.gif

But it is VERY effective! Especially if you miss, the concussion from the blast strips the lil critter of it's fur, leaving very little cleanup. grin.gif

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
    • Or he could go with leech~~~~~
    • Bear can relate too. Tell Leech to start a new account named Leech5, we'll know who he is.If he has any trouble, Bear can walk him through it.
