Mike McCarthy - 49ers OC to be Packers head Coach

The Packers have selected 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy as its head coach.

Hopefully he brings with him some of the magic that he brought to that powerhouse 49er organization! Looks like they are jockeying for the #1 pick in the draft next year!!!!

It appears that Mike McCarthy and Favre had a pretty close relationship when McCarthy was affiliated with the Pack.

I guess I was more in the Bates camp, so I'm not sure what to think of this hire. For the second time now the Packers hire a "unknown" to be a head coach. Like Sherman was before, I don't think McCarthy was really at the top of anyone elses list or radar for a head coaching position. Reading the ESPN article, I definately think this was a hire with Aaron Rodgers in mind. Here is a list of notable QB's this guy has worked with at either a college or pro level: Montana, Gannon, Delhomme, M. Hasselback, Bulger, and Favre, plus a couple other lesser knowns. I think I heard he would like to keep Bates on as he does have 2 years left on his contract. Hopefully Bates will end up staying, though I think he is looking into other head coaching positions. Now the next thing we are waiting for is to see what Favre is going to do.

I'm really worried about this move. Not because of who the Pack gained in Mike McCarthy, but who they most certainly lost in Jim Bates. He sounded completely degected last night and downright depressed. He said that he did not pursue any other HC jobs because he thought he had a great chance with the Packers. Now that he didn't get it he says that it will be unlikely that he will be back because he is going to start pursuing other HC positions hard. Sounds like they just lost one of their best personnel from last year. Arggghhh!!

MM was fired from New Orleans and was a coach on one of the NFL's worst teams in the past three years. That's a ringing endorsement.

Say hello to the Packers of the 80's all over again! This guy lead the 31st ranked offense this year, the packers got a steal. Before that, he was on the Saints staff and assisted with their underacheiving offense. As a Viking's fan, great hire by the Pack! How they could not hire Jim Bates is amazing. Look at what he did with the defense this year. A defense that many beleived would be one of the worst in the leaugue this year. If I were a Packer fan,(thank god I'm not) I would be furious!

I don't want to pile on the Packer fans, who did not have a good year, but I really don't see what McCarthy has to recommend him. He was QB coach in Green Bay in 1999, when Favre did not have his best year. McCarthy went on to help develop Aaron Brooks in New Orleans, which isn't a ringing endorsement of his coaching skills. Then came the three-year stay in San Francisco, where rookie QB Alex Smith managed to throw one TD vs. about ten INTs this season, the last time I checked.
