Coyote Question

Recommended Posts

I'm kind of new to coyote hunting and need a little help. OK I've been sitting out call from like 4PM to when it's to dark to see and I call but don't get much in response. But, I know they are there cause it seems as soon as I get to the house they start howling maybe a half mile away from me (in the same section). I've been using a primos Mini Mag howler and a Primos Ki-Yi distress call. The wind has also been in the right direction. It was blowing to the north and the coyotes have been howling to the south of me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

try different calls like fawn bleats and puppy distress and make sure you call if at all possible during full moon periods(three days before/after) at nights if the conditions are right. My ideal conditions would be less than 15mph winds and lots of white snow. Leave lots of open ground downwind and call hard for 15-20 minutes and get in as many good set ups as possible.

I tried this for my first time last night. What a blast! I borrowed a FoxPro from a friend. I turned it on to pup distress and had two yotes there within a couple of minutes. I was using a 12ga. shotgun with "dead coyote" loads. Someone said they were good to 60 yards. Not the case for me!! I did not get a kill at 55 yards. I stepped it off after I shot. Anyway, it was still fun and I believe I am hooked on this hobby. I will have my .223 out there tonight which is what I should have taken last night. Hopefully those two yotes have short memories and won't remember our little meeting last night.

I prefer to call cattail sloughs when it gets real bitter cold and i usually only use coyote sounds. there are uauslly enough critters around sloughs but those yotes will get very territoral with their food source. also i will call pastures that have thin tree lines going through them. hope this helps some.

Private land is very easy to get on to for coyote hunting, just ask and nearly all will let you hunt. Most landowners like to see wildlife except predators. I've only got a no answer a couple of times and then it is usually easy to find an effective spot on the neighbors land. Late season pheasant hunting i was asked to shoot every fox and coyote I saw or else I couldn't hunt pheasants.
