Tip-Ups for Walleyes questions?

Minnetonka

Recommended Posts

I would like to get some feed-back on the following questions?

1. What is favorite hook to put on a tip-up for walleye? (Both type of hook and size.)

2. What is your favorite bait for a tip-up? (size also)

3. Does anyone know of a case for a single tip-up? I want to store mine in a larger bag without getting it tangled up. I use the regular type of tip-up and not the round kind.

I must first admit that I do not put out tip ups much for walleye. I will usually fish a dead stick rod next to a jigging rod for my two lines. However, I hvae put out tip ups for walleye before. The lure I find myself reaching for the most is the Gem-N-Eye, however, this year I may be reaching for the newer Jig-eye wich is quite similar except for the fact that it has a treble hook rather than a single hook. I would match the lure size with the bait size. Which is going to depend on the lake I am fishing. For instance, On Lake of the Woods I use much smaller bait than I would on Mille Lacs.

However, often times when putting a tip up out for walleye I will just use a plain hook, Either a plain gold or red kahle or octipus hook with a few splitshot crimped on the line a couple of feet above the hook.

My question back is how do you manage to get on the ice with a single tipup? (JK)

Thanks for the reply JK. I rarly use tip ups. I am usally moving from hole to hole and jigging with a single rod looking for active walleyes. I would like to put one tip up down while I am moving around. What size circle hook do you use and do you have a favorite brand?

I'm not sure what is legal out there, so check your rules...

1)#6 Excaliber treble hook

2)Large Emerald or heavy medium golden shinner

3)No idea...I keep mine in my sled.

#6 red treble hook with a large shiner or medium sucker. I just switched from 10# flouro leaders to 30# spiderwire. I haven't tried it yet but I think I will like it. My partner uses similar leaders and I like the way the hook and bait sits, no memory. Sinker 12" above the hook.

I'd reccomend a gold kahle hook and a shiner or fathead (depending on where you're at and what you can get)...

I just about always have a deadstick next to the jigging rod hole... but here in ND you can fish 4 lines... so 2 lines in the house and 2 outside when possible... usually with tipups...

I don't use a tip much but when I do I use a plain hook #6 or #4 and I always put on two minnows. That extra action from two minnows seems to give me an edge when there is other fishermen around.

That was meant as a poor joke. When I go out I usually have at least 4 rods, 2 - 3 tip-ups, 2-3 snap-on rattle reels (they snap on to the poles in my Lodge), so I've never had the need for a single tip-up case.

I like a size 4 gamikatsu hook. believe it or not - pink has been a real good color. i also agree with the above post with the 2 minnows. i thought that was kind of a family secret. my brother lives on Gull lake and for years has always used 2 small fatheads or 2 small crappie minnows and put them on the same hook. He is sold that he catches more compared to a single minnow - and I have to agree. His theory is that the minnows struggle against each other and create a unique action. I have also had luck on certain lakes with small (about the size of a small shiner or large fathead) suckers. Sometimes the action isnt as fast with them - but they usually account for a nicer size fish.

I use # 6 Gamma Treble with 8 lb fluro. Where do you guys hook the bait? I've had better luck not losing the bait behind the dorsel.

I'm definitely going to try 2 bait on a hook, now! Thanks for the tip.

Have you ever tried those tiny glow plastic shads as a teaser??

In Minnesota it is illegal to use just the treble hook on a tip up or any line for that matter, it is considered 3 hooks. If it is connected to a jig then it's o.k.

I use a circle hook with a colored jig head, and usually shiners or a big ol' fathead.

Also when setting the depth, I'll clip on a very small bobber after the depth is all set right next to the spool, that way when you catch a fish you dont have to re-set the depth, just reel it up to the bobber and put the line back down.

If it has the little spinner it it legal. CO Stein stopped me last year and asked what I had on the tip-up and I told him "the trebles with the little spinner" and he replied that's all he wanted to know. He didn't even make me haul it up and show him.

This has been debated on here before... and the final determination (as someone e-mailed the dnr and received a response) was that as long as it had the little spinner (plastic, or whatever type) it was considered legal.

There goes the other family secret! grin.gifThe old upside down minnow trick seems to work well too - but there is a definite trick to hooking them the right way so that they live and are balanced right - if you know the secret - dont give it out!!! wink.gif
