Jiffy Stealth STX Starting

minnowhead

Question

I recieved a new 8" auger for christmas, it takes anywhere from 7 to 10 pulls to get it started. Even after letting sit for 10 minutes of running, it still takes 3 to 6 pulls to restart it. frown.gif Is this normal, I hope not. I mix 24 to 1 oil as requested with a high quality gas. Have run 3 tanks of gas through it, thinking it should be getting eaiser to start, I am just not too thrilled with this right now. Any advise, Thanks

My brother just began ice fishing last year and he had the same problem (at least similar). Not sure how familiar you are with ice augers, but you need to hold the throttle wide open when trying to start it. If this is not the problem, then I am fresh out of advice.

If yours is a 3 hp model, get the carb adjusted at a repair shop. It is an EPA setting that doesn't work below 32 degrees.

If it is a 2 hp unit, this is my process.

Full choke, a pull till it fires.

Half choke, pull and should start with one or two pulls.

Warm it up a bit, flip off the choke and drill.

A new plug every year is cheap insurance of a good running small engine too.

A lot of Jiffys need the carb adjusted when first purchased and they run fine after that. If you have to pull 20+ times to start your auger, there is something wrong and has nothing to do with the brand.

I was told by a tech at Cabela's that you choke it, push in the yellow plug and pull. Motor starts and kills. Just turn off the choke, push in the yellow plug and pull. Mine did exactly that. Man, the first hole I punched, I thought I was going in with the auger. That thing cuts like crazy. I have to say that I had an old strikemaster and you had to hang onto that one. If it caught, you could be going spinning in a circle. This auger you barely have to hold on. Other than when it is done with the ice. I really like mine.

I have had a Jiffy Sleath 2 horse 9 " for three seasons and it starts within a few pulls everytime.

Open the gas cap vent

put it to full choke (red lever all the way down)

When it catches (no more than a few pulls) turn the choke off

Pull again with the choke off and it should fire.

If it ran dry and has a fresh tank of gas or is super cold: rest your elbow on the throttle to get fuel into the line quicker)

Pull again and it should fire

I believe most Augers have the same Tecumseh engines.

Good Luck

Eskimo has some couple models that uses a chainsaw motors. They also have models that use Tech. motors too. The 3HP which I believe is the Baracuda Plus and then they have a 2HP Baracuda so they too uses Tech. For any service work on any of the Tech motor you can go to a small engine shop that works on Tech and the will work on them. Lots of the 3HP Jiffys require some tweeking of the carb right out of the box. As mentioned this is due in large part to the EPA. You know those ice augers add a lot of pollution. ;. Once the carb is set properly you will be in business.
