seized convert-a-ball hitch

CPL

Question

I need some help. I have a convert-a-ball (one inch shank, chrome version (not stainless)) that is seized up. Any suggestions on how to get the 2" ball off (boat) so I can get the 1 7/8" ball (ice fishing trailer) on?

Is it a lost cause so I should just buy a new one?

Thanks for the advice,

Scott

go to an auto store and get some PB Blaster or Wrench in a Can and spray it on, that may do the trick, they are penetrating lubricants that some times work. Or...do what you said that way you'll have two and won't need to switch.

Yep, I was also going to suggest a BFH.

I'll third the BFH, and of course I hope you know the rule that every time someone mentions needing one, that means you increase the size one notch!! grin.gif You'll also need something to hit the pin if its that kind. Use a good strong high grade bolt of about the same size. I can't remember now though if these have a pin that holds them on or of that's the other kind of convertible hitch.

A torch to heat that sucker up, penetrating oil and a hammer. If it's the ball hitch like one's I've used, don't use a screwdriver to pound the pin out. Use something else without a plastic handle. wink.gif

I now own 2 seperate receivers, one for each size ball hitch....much easier than those seized up convertable ones..

I've got the same hitch, and I love it. All except for having the same problem you have. To remedy the seized ball, I used a penetrating oil, soaked it overnight (sprayed heavily). Then the next day using a deadblow hammer (plastic w/steel shot inside), I was able to get it off of the pin. Now I remove the whole assembly from the reciever and keep it inside the truck until I need it. Saves on sore legs from accidentally walking into it at night. crazy.gif I also put antiseize liberally on the pin when switching the balls. I store the extra balls in a freezer ziplock bag, to keep the anti-seize from getting on anything/everything. Haven't had a problem since doing this over 3 yrs ago now. smirk.gif

I'd consider getting a tri-ball (3 sizes that you remove the whole piece and turn it 90-degrees.) I had two different types of convert-a-ball deals, and both of them had issues with seizing up. I've been very happy with the tri-ball, it cost about $35 at Northern Tool.

That's exactly what happened to me. I switch balls very often pulling all sorts of trailers, always ran into problems with the center pin locking up.

I switched with the 3 ball setup and never had a problem since, speed of switch is even faster than convert-a-ball.
