I can get one it just seems that no one wants to give us guys a deal. They are all chargeing the same full price... supply and demand I guess, but you think someone would want to earn my business. I hate when retailers mark it up because they can just to earn an extra buck.

I think the price is set by the manufacturer - same w/ Vex. It's probably a way to help the smaller bait/fishing stores compete w/ the Gander Mountains. Otherwise a big retailer would sell them for cheap and no one would shop at the smaller places.

I looked around and found out Marcum does have distribution agreements with the dealers. This is the same type of agreement other suppliers have(like Otter, Vex and even Oakley)

I was told Marcums LRP(Lowest Retail Price) allowed is $479. If this is true than any price under this is against their agreement and the dealer could lose the Marcum Line.

BTW I got mine as an early Christmas present from Sportsman's in Coon Rapids, for $479

This is in general (I know nothing of the Marcum company's business practices).

All dealers can sell their wares at any price they would like to. Otherwise there would be legal issues. However, manufactures often incorporate a minimum pricing strategy(MAP). They then "threaten" to stop shipping to the dealer/distributor in the future if the minimum pricing is not adhered to.

Many companies have entry level price point lines that are not price-protected and then higher priced model lines that are MAP priced. This marketing strategy is commonplace. It ensures profitability throughout the distribution channel. It stops the "big boys" from running mom & pop shops out of business. It also positions the product into the echelon intended (perceived value = you get what you pay for).

I'm not a retailer but I would assume that they need to make money on items, especially those in high demand so when they closeout items at or below cost they stay in business. If marcum ship 20 units to a retailer it wouldn't make much sense to "blow them out" cheap and then be out of stock again. I'm not advocating retailers ripping people off but they need to make some dough on items that are desired by a lot of people to stay in business. It's hard to get a deal on great products that a lot of people want, that's the reward to Marcum and their distributors and they deserve to be rewarded for making and carrying good products.

I am both a retailer and a distributor, I can tell you that I will give you a much better deal on an item that I do not stock multiples of if you pay in full before I order your product.

Why, because I do not have to stock it or multiples of it and shipping and receiving products that take labor or hours stocking. I also do not have to take money out of my pocket or business line to stock multiple items.

I will however consider supply and demand into any purchase. Yes this will benefit retailers/distributors when NEW product is released, but remember if stocked outdated inventory or demoed equipment is leftover that is where the consumer will benefit.

Shop around and get the best deal you can.
