Recommended Posts

I just bought a caller from the Johnny Stewart line.During muzzleloader season i saw and heard alot of the Yotes Howling and barking. But now since this last snow there hasnt been anything happening. Ive been out twice at nightbetween 9Oclock and midnight and ihavent had any respnses to the coy/wolf call or the rabbit distress. i AM PRETTY GREEN at this new sport anybody have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

I hunted the Aitkin area Friday night from 9 to 12pm, Saturday morning at first light and again Saturday night and never saw or heard a thing. No tracks at all in the fresh snow either. Last weekend there were tracks everywhere I went but I did not see anything either. I have not been able to get them to howl back too.

Its like they dissappeared. Maybe next weekend...

Seems like pup in disstres works when nothing else will.I had one last year come in to it at night. It dropped down off the river bank 10 yards from me. I never heard it coming so I almost had to clean out the shorts. blush.gif At least the 870 did it's job.

Junior - Hang in there, its a low % game no matter where or when you go. Just be sure to pay extra attention to your setup. Everything has to be just right - your entry, wind direction, camo. If things aren't just right, wait until they are or you're just gonna make it even tougher to kill those yotes. Also, they might just be in a different area at the moment. Maybe they found a dead cow or deer a mile or so away. Give it time, have patience and good luck. Also, the howling/territorial type calls may work better towards the end of Jan into Feb. Maybe stick more to the distress calls for now.

With coyotes patience is important. You will have more unproductive stands than productive. Coyotes have a pretty big area they maintain. In the winter, they travel a little more to find food so they could be a mile or so away from where you are calling from. Keep plugging away and you will one day have a coyote appear. Then all the bad days will be forgotten grin.gif Be sure to use different calls than what is usually used. Use calls such as, pup distress, flicker, turkey distress, gray fox pups, and things besides the rabbit that everyone uses. I use hand calls, digital calls, and tape calls. My preference is hand calls but the e-callers allow more sounds to use. Good luck out there wink.gif

Just ordered my new Minaska Bandit electronic caller today for varmint and predator calling. Cant wait, should be here in 2 weeks! 100 digital sounds tongue.gif! Also took some points of my Cabela's rewards and bought a predator decoy too. Anyone know of some good places in the Cloquet, Wrenshall, Esko, Carlton area? grin.gif

Just picked up a FoxPro 416b with remote this week. Haven't had a chance to take it out but Dad has.

He had a nice fox about 350 yards last nite peek around the corner of the woods, he didn't pull the trigger.

Tonite he setup in a different spot, put out the rabbit in distress call then used the challenge call, that did it, he had a nice 'yote under 100 yards but missed, shooting a new 25 wssm, he held too high I guess.

Can't wait to get out and try this, never done it before.

End of the line, try to follow the soo line up there and try to get access to private land. i have hunted yotes up there the past two years and they are all over. you shouldn't have too many problems finding access if you knock on enough doors. Good luck.
