I have had dreams about catching big Sturgeon ever since I saw my first picture of one. I do not have a boat though. I might be able to talk my friend and FM pro-staffer Dan Thiem into bringing his boat up tough. April 16 looks good to me for a few days. Is the water ice free up there that time of year? Also, is there a place to camp close by this area? We would not be crossing into Canada right? grin.gif

We have already talked about what trips we want to try and take next year and this is my second choice right behind the MONSTER channel cats in the Red....

Hey der Murph, may see you twice next year eh.....COOL!

The campgrounds won't be open, other than the Wigwam I'm not sure what other resort's will be open either but a few of them have camp spots.

I have some land right near the Wheelers access, mile or so from the Wigwam and you and Dan could camp there if you'd like, no facilities but priced right! Hope you have a camper or something, tent on the frozen ground might be rough!

Most of them pic's are of angler's on the bay. 4-mile bay could quite possibly be locked up tight with ice still mid April, and the lower end of river could be too. It could also be a broken up dangerous mess downstream as well.

Time and Mother Nature will tell on the ice-out.

Stretches more up river should be good to go no problem.

On a side note.....With the date moved back the Pike bite would be another fishing option for those with the time and the inkling for fish with teeth! Zippel, Bostic, and 4-mile bays, as well as spots over on Muskeg bay have some way good ice-out Pike oppertunities for BIG fish.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NEW DATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

April 21st

"Well... Easter kinda tossed a Bass into the picture on this!

Disclaimer:

Our little outing on the Rainy River is not sponsored by anyone or any group. The purpose of this post is to save anglers some money and a chance to fish for big fish with old and new friends. To avoid DNR permits and insurance costs, please do not post wagering, kitties, awards or pots in this thread. This is simply a fishing trip.

OK, enough with the disclaimer stuff!

Since our "list" seemed to generate enough interest, the accomadations are listed below.

Please use this thread to find rides and open boat seats.

DATE:

Friday, April 21st 2006

Accomadtions:

Schusters Resort

Wigwam Resort

Mention Sturgeon Excursion! $20 plus tax per night!

Because the "season" is closed for walleye, this is the time resort owners generally leave and most everything in the area will be closed. The closest restaurant will be in Baudette which is 12 miles away. Since the cabins have full kitchens, you might want to bring along your meals. Pictures of Sturgeon are not very filling...I've been told.

There will be an open bar on Saturday night for anyone that would like to share their "One That Got Away" stories.

A number of us will be leaving the Mpls/St Paul metro area Friday morning. The drive runs about 6 hours depending on the size of your bladder and if your driver is willing to stop.

Departure dates can vary and if you would like to stay longer than Monday, please let the resort know when you make reservations."

That date woks for me too. 20 bucks a night huh?! Nice deal and an open bar to boot shocked.gif I have not heard from my fishing partner Dan yet, so depending on him I will not make any arrangements or ask for a seat in someone's boat yet. Hopefully he will be able to go as well...

Is it wrong that I have already got two rods ready for this?

Nope. And if I were to take a shot in the dark, I'd say 'I Da Man' has 4 that are already rigged up and ready to go.

This date works better. Should be more open water as well.

I'll be looking for an open boat seat too. wink.gif Have spare catfish rod/reels as well as terminal tackle. Plus I'm really good at gobbing nightcrawlers onto a hook. grin.gif

I would think its a safe bet to say Brian has 4 rods set up now... All 7 of my big rods are rigged and ready to go, and I was seriously considering buying that Tiger rod I've been eyeballing before the excursion.

I'll have a few loaners along if anyone needs to use them.

Chris I may be 'round lurking for awhile with some options. I know how to use your camera anyhow, maybe some green and slimey too eh. How long you around, I've been meaning to email you in re. to kaz/17th, and early URL.

And tell that Dave guy I'm glad he's makin' it. 1 line only on these border water's, and he can pratice up with 100# sacks of tater's over winter!

I think I only had 3 opportunities to fish with more than one line last year.. ONE line doesnt bother me any... Less things to get in the way.

100# sacks of potato's? I'll leave them to Dennis to toss around and I will save my energy for early season cats before this sturgeon trip!

Maybe I'll eat 20# of those potato's over winter and get a little extra insulation for the cold air.

Fisky-

I'm coming up with Kaz that weekend (15-18) and staying at his place. We'll be fishing hard I reckon. grin.gif Plan on hitting Red on the way Thurs. I think.

Will be back up to URL New Years weekend and Dan said you might be joining us. I have to e-mail Dan back and then will probably be in contact with you as well. I don't really see a problem.

What types of rod set ups are you all planning on using? I have a couple of ol abus that need a new home. I was thinking about 8ft med-heavey set-ups. Maybe longer rods to get a better spread in an anchored boat?

I love Baudette!

I'm betting with your handle you have just the right set ups!

Heavy bass gear will work, but it put more of a strain on the fish and yourself. Muskie/catfish gear is perfect!

I would like to see one of the guys hook into a biggun and have it pull the boat around! grin.gif

That would be a sturgeon EXCURSION! lol!
