Short trips and city mileage isn't that great. However, on longer trips I have got up to 18 mpg (with a tail-wind). On average for longer trips, I avg. 15-16 mpg. which I don't think is all that bad. Maybe 1-2 mpg. less than the 1500 with the 5.3. Nice to have the extra power when you need it.

I get about 13 on most tanks. The only time I get much better (15 -ish) is if I have a strong tail wind. I seldom get less than 11, even if I'm pulling a heavy trailer into a head wind.

I average 13 mpg with my 1500HD crewcab with the 6.0L. Best was 15 mpg towing a suv and full of gear and guys coming back from turkey hunting in the Black Hills. All hwy miles on that tank. Worst was 11.5 mpg again loaded but lots of city driving.

I really like mine. But it sits in my shed unless I'm fishing or hunting. I bought a Malibu for my comuting/driving around vehicle. Tough to put on 100+ miles per day with that kind of mileage.

Bought a Ram 1500 in August. I've been getting 14.5 - 15 driving back and forth to work and 18 on highway. Love the Hemi power also. It has 355 geers which seems a little low for pulling but got 16 MPG pulling my Lund Pro Angler down the highway at 80MPH. I think the cab is smaller than the Chev HD but love the truck otherwise. It seems very solid and sturdy. The real test is yet to come with ice fishing. That is if we ever get any cold and snow.

The 1500HD will be the same as the 2500HD for the most part. Also if you get the light duty 2500 it will be similar. They all have the 6.0 liter standard motor. The 6.0 is a snappy motor. My dad has one and it is nice but like mentioned it averages 12-13mpg. If you look at the 2500HD you can go with the 6.6L Duramax which is what I have and love it is awesome. I average 17 MPG and have gotten a few near 20 MPG. That is great other than that diesel has been so darn expensive. Or you can also get the 8.1 liter big block (in the 2500HD) this is a thirsty motor too. You can't get either of those 2 motors in the 1500HD or light duty 2500.

I know you are talking about HD's but I figured I'd throw in my mileage from my 03 1500 silverado with the 5.3. I've been doing quite a bit of driving with deer hunting season and the worst tank I've gotten in three weeks was 17.1 mpg. Best was 19.0 (heading home with those huge tailwinds last week). I have been babying they gas pedal quite a bit only accelerating hard when merging or absolutely necessary. If I play around a lot I usually get around 15mpg. Just fyi.

1500HD is a marketing gimmick. Its a 3/4 ton truck and you'll get 3/4 ton gas mileage with it. 6.0 liter motor is a gas pig. My 2500HD always got in that same 12-13 range everyone else is talking about.

Can you get the 5.3 in the 1500HD. That would seem to be a good compromise between performance and fuel economy. I currently have an 04' 1500 with the 5.3 and I am well satisified with its performance, except for loadweight. I work in ag and quite often load as many seed bags as possible into the truck. The 1500 is a "squater".

If you haul a lot do yourself a favor get a Duramax if you want a Chevy, otherwise a Cummins Dodge, you won't be disappointed and mileage it's much better, but be sure to get a 3:50 or 3:73 rearend...

I have a 2001 1500 silverado with tanneau cover. I drive over here in south dakota, 100 miles a day commute for work. If I baby it and just do 75mph. I can average 18-19 mpg. With that said...if you start putting your foot in it like I usually do 85mph then it starts to drop significantly. In the neighborhood of 14-15. just my .02 Iceman out>

No Spud you can't get the 5.3 on the 1500HD. Which is kind of dumb. If you could I would have a 1500HD rather than my 2500HD. The new crew cab with the stubby box (5.5') is the only way to get a crew cab with a 5.3l. That is just not enough box for me that extra foot on the standard short box makes all the difference for me. The magnum otter is 74" so that is my deciding factor. I travel over the course of the winter fishing too much to run around with the end gate down.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
