My '04 archery elk

Cooter

Recommended Posts

Here's some details, try to make it short:

North-central CO, camped at 9,200 ft approx 1.5 mi from WY border. Sept 5, no bugling heard at all. Second night spotted him in an old, overgrown beaver pond/creek area. Strong wind quartering towards me, 10 min of light left. Did a real, real fast stalk of a about 100 yrds. and got away with it due to the wind. Snuck up to within 15 yrd, he had his head down eating, facing directly away from me. All I could see was horns, butt, and a big nut sack. I knelt behing a small pine, he saw movement and made a couple big jumps out in front of me and stopped broadside to stare at me at 20 yrds. I drew, aimed, and let er fly, heard it hit but didn't know where. He bolted and disappeared in the timber, heard crashing then all was silent. Next morning found him 60 yrds in, pass through double lung shot. Boned him out rather than quartering, lots of work! Amazing how a little 100gr Thunderhead can kill that big of an animal in less than 10 seconds. The only elk I saw that week.
