Ice Fishing Traditions (Old Photos!!)

Are those classic Arctic Cat snowmobile suits?

We had those! Remember the T buckle belt on all those old suits?

I too started out with the spud as a teen, then "graduated" to the Swedish Spoon. I'm pretty sure I could chisel faster than the spoon! Then I finally got a Mora...man did that thing cut!

I wish I would have kept all that old stuff. How about the Jaro? charcoal and liquid hand warmers you put in the red velvet cases! I do remember as kids very cold feet! Those cruddy black rubber bottom boots with nylon sides and felt liners that always needed drying! Man clothing has come along way too!

Thanks for taking me back!

Ferny.

Hanson, those are some great pics and really take me back. That is what i have always loved about ice fishing, it can really be a great family pasttime. Just being out on the ice is inviting. Thanks again.

Hanson- We were probably on Union lake at the same time, I used to go spearing with my grandpa back then, I would have been roughly the same age. We only lived about 15 miles away, didn't get to go often but still remember going. Nothing like a flash from the past. Cool pics.

This made me remember my first time ice fishing. It was 1983, i was 4 years old on Upper Red with my dad, grampa and uncle. we were set up around some people that they knew. i had no idea how i was supposed to catch a fish through a hole, so one of the guys started telling me how to do it. he told me that when i see the bobber go down, set the hook and then turn and run as fast as i can. well as the story goes i took off running and the walleye came out of the hole like a rocket about 4 feet in the air. and i guess all the old guy just about died laughing at me. gotta love the advice.

Hanson,

Thanks for bumping this back up, it's new to me. Very cool pictures...classics!

I don't recall any "on the ice photos" taken by my parents, only "back at the house" type stuff. I think I'll take more photos of the kids on the ice this year.

My late dad made an old home movie (I believe it is digitized on CD now), no kids in it, but ice fishing in the late fifties or early sixties. It has a view though the windshield driving onto the lake and old timers hiding from the cameraman embarrassingly small sunfish in their coats. It's a riot.

Both him and his brother look like the kids from a Christmas Story smile.gif.

But when you think of it, during the winter time, most kids look like the kids from the movie "Christmas Story".

Nice post Hanson!

My uncle Bob (god father) had the same portable shack. I remember an outing about the same time on East Fish lake in Maple Grove. One of the hand full of times I went ice fishing with my father. In that shack was my uncle, my dad and my self. I can not remeber if we caught any fish, but it was fun. I am sure it still up in rafters of garage in the orig. box, with masking tape on corners of box. I will ask him at christmas if he still has it. LOL! We only had hand auger thought!

Thanks

OMG That was my first thought! Way too funny.

Hanson, nice job. If we can learn one thing from this post... take pictures of you and your family doing the stuff you love. These picts are invaluable!

Funny no one picked up on that in "05". That movie has been around since like 1980.

But it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pics, not the posts from "07".

It is a great post though. I take so many images/pics of my kids. Good thing to do. Maybe in 2020, they will post some images of them as fishing kids on FM. cool.gif

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
