Power Pro - Spiderwire

Recommended Posts

I went from Spiderwire to Power Pro to Fireline.

Power Pro frayed prematurely, and I lost countless lures to unexpected line snaps. Casting, hook setting, you name it PP frustrated me to a point of no return.

I still have PP on my muskie reel and that 80lb test stuff I do like however. The smaller diameter PP line I did not have good experiences with.

For what reasons is power pro better than spider wire?

I used Power pro once for muskies, and it wasn't good. I ended up cutting it off and going back to tuff-line.

I've been using spider wire since the late 90s with absolutely no problems at all.

I keep hearing power pro is better, but nobody is giving reasons.

Fuzzy-line (fireline is the worst line I've ever used).......It frays terrible and is stiff, it also doesn't have the sensitivity of spiderwire.......

With Power Pro I use mostly the 8# for jigging and rigging. 10# for trolling cranks/sticks. I think I have 40# on my dipsey rods and downrigger rods.

I like the fact PP is lower diameter and gets baits down deeper faster. I have never experienced the breaking with PP. As with any line when it gets worn or kninked up cut the damaged part off. Every superline will frey or discolor with use. I get less with it than I did with SW or Fireline.

Plus I found SW to be real stiff and not as castable. Those are my reasons. Personel Preference I guess. Buy whatever ya like.

Because a lot of us have used it more then ONCE before we cut it off, so we have better feel for what the line does long term versus someone who judged the line on a couple hours of Muskie fishing.

I use to be a big "tuff line" user until I found Power Pro. My first experince with PP was not so good...used 65lbs for one of my muskie rods. I swore I would never use it again. I was always getting back-lash and bite-in on the reel. I then bought a new reel at Reeds and they put on 80lbs PP and it was the best. I have now changed over all my muskie rods to 80lb PP and couldnt be happier with its performance.

Power Pro is generally stronger in the diameters I believe. Here are their size comparisons

PP Size, Diameter, Mono Equivalent

8 .005 1

10 .006 2

15 .007 4

20 .009 6

30 .011 8

40 .013 10

50 .014 12

65 .016 16

80 .017 18

100 .018 20

150 .022 30

200 .030 50

250 .035 80

Yeah, unfortunately, the lightest line is at 8lbs

They don't have 6lb test. So I went with Fire Line!

confused.gifconfused.gif...Your 6 pound Fireline has a 2 pound diameter, Power Pro 8 pound has a 1 pound diameter.

So you now have a thicker and weeker line "fireline 6-2" then if you would have went with PP 8-1.

I've tried both and I notice that most have used spiderwire several years ago. spiderwire stealth is very close to power pro, one of my buddies is sponsored by pure fishing so I got a jumbo spool out of him. I think it is almost as good, I dont like the grind and limpness of the original spiderwire. I think power pro loses it color faster but is smoother all the way. Note to Chuck if you ever notice that your braid is fraying check the eyelets for chips. The best way to do this is use a q-tip and run them around the guides, if it hags up or pulls cotton replace the guide.

WOW Pierbridge........ Thanks for educating me on how long to use a fishing line.

Again, beside personal preference, what is the difference???

Is one line "stiffer" than the other? Does one line have a "softer" wrap, where it flattens out, when compared to another? Which one frays or fades the fastest?

I think Power Pro is the limpest and doesn't flatten out or dig into itself on the spool. It does lose it's color pretty quickly, though. Spider Wire seems stiffer and I always have problems with it digging into the spool. They both fray, I'm not sure which does it quicker.
