The Grebe
Alas, the only ice you are going to find for quite sometime yet, will be that which is floating and clanking together in a tall cool drink, to ward off the August heat! Enjoy!
PERCHJR
Count me in, this heat sucks!!! I am counting the days till winter heaven!!! GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING!!!
Matt Johnson
Well, I figured about 4 months from now we'll be on the ice ...probably even sooner... 2 inches is all I need to shimmy my way across the ice with a rope tied from my waist to a tree on shore Just need to get out to that first breakline where the weeds open up... Perchpapa
Two years ago I was fishing perch on about 4in of ice the first weekend in November on a small lake in eastern ND. That is less three months from now. That probably won't happen again for a long time but you never know.

icecold
Matt, I thought I was the only one who ties a rope around my waist and then to my atv on shore to get to my hot spot on river duruing first ice, I also wear my PFD for backup,
Matt Johnson
PFD... ice-picks... rope around the waist that's tied to something on shore... spud-bar... quick feet... yeah, that should about sum it up for the first couple times I hit the ice every year Last winter I went out on about 2 inches and fished roughly 10 yards away from open water. I don't recommend that, and I consider myself to be an (Contact US Regarding This Word) for going out on ice that thin, but I still do it anyway Just make sure you head out with a partner (or at least have your partner waiting on shore holding onto the other end of the rope while you walk out ). OK, all joking aside, first ice can be very dangerous, heck, any ice can be dangerous. I always venture out onto first ice with a friend or someone else is in the vicinity. I know we all get all hyped up to ice fish, and once that first ice finally gets here we all want to be out fishing, but be careful. I don't want to see anyone take the plunge and not return. I've fell through the ice a few times, mostly because of my own stupidity when I was younger, but a couple times it was by pure accident and it was when ice conditions were "safe" and solid. I went through a spring once that wasn't on any lake map, the surrounding ice was 10-12 inches thick, and I was walking around punching holes and next thing I knew I was going through the ice. I hit a patch of ice that was only about an inch thick. Good thing my buddy was there to help. I've also gone through during late ice when the ice was more than 2 feet thick. This was actually last winter. I hit a patch of honey-combed ice that had water flow throughout the different layers. I was walking back to shore after a day of ice fishing and when I got about 40 yards from hard ground I went through about 28 inches of weak, rotten ice. Good thing it was almost 60 degrees out and I could touch bottom. I'm only saying this because I take a lot of precautions and it can still happen, and at anytime, you need to always take precautions and be ready for anything that can happen. Just be safe out there. Good Fishin, Matt Johnson
Captain B.R.K
Your crazy for going out on the ice w/ 2" between your life and the water But I'm not suprised because a lot of people do it......you seem to have your ducks in a row for safety and that's great For me, I still have plenty of other things to do before that ice comes (fall bassin and deer hunting)! BUT I will be ready for when it comes. Just need to dust everything off a bit and I'll be ready to run n gun w/ the best of em'!

The Grebe
MJ...Sounds like standard stuff? Thats why I have'nt won the lottery, I used up all my luck in my younger years, doing the same things you posted, with the same results. I probably still take more chances then I should, A lot less then I used to, but certainly more then your average bear! We (Notice I said "we")are pretty experienced, travel in a group, never bunch up, have safety gear, picks and ropes, even carry flotation cushions on early ice. Ice fishing is what we do? riverrat56
Fished early ice last year on about 2 in, looked around at my buddys and said what in the he** are we doing out here. You would walk and water would shoot through the holes, it was an interesting experience. Good part was that the fish were biting and I had the lake to myself for a week. Can't wait till we get ice, football practice it to dang hot, has me thinking about freezing on the ice. Pete Riola
In I believe 1990 we had 7 inches of ice in Ottertail county on November 9. That means there's potential for ice in 83 days or less. The walleye fishing was awesome too. Gotta go I've got to get the Otter ready.
Matt Johnson
Yep, Pete's getting the ice jonz again! Good Fishin, Matt Johnson
hanson
Quote: Gotta go I've got to get the Otter ready. You mean its not ready yet??? My Otter is still in the back up my pickup! Matt, its still there from the portable modification get-together. The most I can ask for is fishable ice by Thanksgiving. That just happens to be the weekend following the last weekend of deer season. A couple years ago, Upper Red had 7-8" on Thanksgiving weekend with another 4-5" of snow. We took the snowmobiles out 2-3 miles from Rogers. Caught some crappies too.
Matt Johnson
Thanksgiving would be nice. Deitz and I (back when he was Exudedude and I was MJ5 , we also met up with HawgTime) hit a Metro lake on Thanksgiving weekend one year with about 3 inches of ice in some spots. I got to watch the "spiderweb" effect take place as cracks starting shooting towards the hole I was fishing out of. I second everyone was standing over my hole talking, then the next second I see everyone backing up while the cracks instantly appeared. That was an interesting experience to say the least. Needless to say, not more than 1 or 2 people fished next each other the rest of the day I'd be very happy to have fishable ice by Thanksgiving in the Metro Area, given the recent years...
