House license on portable question

nluchau

Question

I purchased a Clam ice house and it came with a sleeve where you put your License number and shelter license. It says in the clam manual to take a nail and line up the sleeve on your house and poke holes and then place those rivet type plugs that came with it through them to secure it to the house. How many people actually do this? Will it cause rips in the future? My last time out I just secured it with safety pins. What are people doing to secure their license on their portables? How bout high powered magnets?

Thanks for any replies. I just dont want big holes in the canvas

I just used a hot nail or small bolt and melted a hole for each one. It keeps the fabric from tearing and fraying. I’ve had mine on for three winters now and have had no problems with it.

One thing I would suggest is that you put your numbers on a thicker piece of cardboard, cut a piece of thin metal(I just straightened and cut a metal coat-hanger) and ran that through the cardboard. This gives the holder some support. Otherwise it tends to sag a little.

I bought refelctive numbers to put my license # on it and haven't touched since I did that.

I ran into them at Menards shortly after I bought the house. They had two and three inch sizes available...I opted for the three inch size for more visibility...and they give a strong glare.

Anywhere would be fine. The one thing to make sure is that it is out of the way when you are folding the house up. I got lucky but my buddy was not so lucky. He has a Scout and he took the same advice as above, but put it on the side of the house. So when he folded up his house it ended up bending the sign. He did move it, but he now has two little holes on the side of the house.

I have the trap Pro and I put the sign on the door. My dad has the 5600 and he put his above the door.

I used an awl to make the hole. Then I printed my number on a piece of card stock with the computer. I left room for the sticker part of the license and attached it to the card stock. Wrapped the whole thing in clear contact paper and slid it in the holder. I make up a new one every year or two for next to nothing.

bj1, Good idea but I assume this obstructed your view a bit out the window. I don't really want to poke holes in the canvas either. I have my license holder all setup with my license and darkhouse license. We'll see - either above the door or start from scratch and place on window. Thanks for all the ideas

I have a fish trap. I took an old white sheet and cut out a piece about 3inch by 3 feet and wrote my lic numbers on that. Safteyed it to the front of the house and there were no problems with folding or ripping.

I did the same thing as Lobes93 and used a hot nail to melt a small hole. It's been working great so far. I printed my numbers on a sheet and left space at the end so I could stick the shelter tag on the sheet and had it laminated. I just put my new 05 sticker over the 04 one and am good to go. I also put mine on the Door of my fishtrap pro.

They work fantastic there is no hole when your done and you can not tear the Clam fabric even if you wanted.

Mines on the front of my Fishtrap Guide, others have them on the back as stated above the sides do not work for the pull over fishtrap type of house's, fold your clam up before you pick your spot.

Good Luck

I just printed out my DNR License # on my computer it wasn't 3 inches but I was checked by the CO on Sunday on Red Lake and he told the other guys with me to look at my portable and do the same. One guy was given a warning for not having his # on his.

I put the DNR sticker deal on a metal shower curtain clip and clip it on the zipper of the door. This allows me to use my fish house license on any portable or hardside house I am in. I print off my DNR license on a sheet of paper and slid in in the provided sleeve.
