Captain B.R.K

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, I know it's still a ways away, but less than 1 month to go before we can fish open waters LEGALLY for walleyes...on the Rainy River special season that is!

Anyone else going this year?

We've got reservations already and have it marked on the calendar for March 18-19-20th......Less than one month away, I guess it isn't that a ways away after all grin.gif

Let the Bumper boat Games begin! I'll be there fishing and people watching, never miss it, a great time to see boat ramp calamities! Hopefully the river will be opened up for you guys by the 18th BRK. When river level and flows are right it is some of the easiest Walleye fishing ever and there are lot's of BIG ones to be caught too.

I have my reservations all set for the 28th-4th. Captian there has not been very many years that it is fishable from Birchdale on down by the 18th. I hope your guess is right, I would probably try to move my trip up 1 week. My best trip ever started on the 22nd. I am usually one of the first out there breaking ice.

It is fun to watch all the action. I do it the easy way. We show up real early the first day, unload the boat tie to a tree, it is a beater just for Rainy I can leave it on the bank all week. Go to Canada update our RABC, get lisence and bait reciept. Then we are set to fish on the less crowded side with no worries and enjoy a week away.

I have never personally fished the Rainy in the spring. I have always hit Pool 4 and the Missouri River. Mix that in with no seasons on the South Dakota lakes and I am a busy man come ice off.

I can't wait to put the boat back in the water again. grin.gif

Rainy River? You mean pig walleyes? smile.gif

I was fortunate enough to spend a couple days with BDR out on the Rainy River last March. Brian knows that stretch incredibly well and I owe just about of the success to him. I learned a lot about walleye fishing on that trip. I never experienced walleye fishing like that before I went. It's not the fact that you catch a lot of fish, it's the fact that the fish are pigs! I've only experienced two occasions during open water when I've gotten into both quantity and impressive quality. The Rainy River is one, and the other was during a tourny (Brian knows what I'm talking about wink.gif). When I go to Canada we catch a ton of walleyes, but not a whole lot of 22-inch plus fish, but on the Rainy you're catching 24, 25 and 26s on a regular basis and 28-30s are caught quite often as well. These fish are thick too! It's a plastic bite too, no need to get frozen hands by playing with minnows. White or Firetail Ring-N-Grubs are a phenomenal bait on the Rainy. I'm going to miss the Rainy run this year, but best of luck to everyone who makes it up there for the walleye bonanza! Some big stugeon out there too!

BDR- I hear you and I'm going on a gut feeling that it will be open by then. I went to ClementsonAccessOnRainyRiver's HSOforum to see the last 4-5 year averages for ice out dates. It was right around that time for Birchdale.

Here's wishing for a tropical storm within the next 3 weeks:)

18 inch Crappie-I wish I could invite all to come up and fish with us, but it just can't be done. Space is very limited, Sorry! I am willing to share any info I have and if we are up there at the same time I would certainly point you in the right direction.

Outdoor Ran- If you have no criminal record, getting the Remote border crossing permit and then getting a license and bait is very simple. The whole process takes about an hour and 40-$50. That would be me going out of Frontier ant time I can.

Keep watching the Rainy River forum and ClementsonAccessOnRainyRiver Resorts HSOforum, it will get going in there anytime now.

BDR, Thanks for the info, I was at Gander last Thursday and wanted to chat with you but looks like your girls needed to get home. I hear about fishing up there and would go but my boat is stored out side and has 2 feet of snow on it. My next house will have a 6 car garage, heated of corse, so I can enjoy fishing the river Redwing and rainy. But will take any open seat anytime someone has one...

Crappie- if you start showeling now, you might have the boat free just in time for open water up there:)

I too am a rookie at fishing on the river up there, but have had success. I'll share what I have learned...just ask ????

Captain B.R.K, After yesterday there will be no need to shovel. Ya I would like to learn where to put in at and what part to fish the rest should be like fishing Redwing I am thinking. I have fished off the dock in International falls last summer and did good, but never been out in a boat yet.

Wirz- where have you been.....kinda of quiet:)

No open water this last weekend up there, went out to South Dakota for walleyes and perch. Had a BLAST out there, limits of eyes and perch. Perch were all 10-11.5"! True JAlApies grin.gif

Been really busy with work and track. Spent two weeks in Florida training for work, that sort of thing. Definitely getting ready for open water though. Bought a new depth finder and bow mount trolling motor for the boat. Spent a couple a paychecks at Gander already. Was there last night-not much left. They've resorted to selling display racks.

If we go to Rainy, going to have to do some digging to get the boat out, I'm all sweaty and excited just thinking about it.

Talk to ya later

Northlander and Matt it was great to have you guys come this year. We couldn't have timed it any better. It was awesome fishing with you guys and then finish off the week with my Dad and 13 year old son in the boat.

Here's a couple that keep me coming back.
