yote/fox questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I am kinda new to this predator hunting thing. I am used to hunting the big timber in wisconsin where i finally shot my first fox this winter. Now im located in southern MN and wondering some calling tips or location tips. What do you use for calls? etc...

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Couple tips I've learned the hard way. First, your approach and setup location are critical. Nothing else matters if you screw these up. You gotta have the wind right with good visibility while staying hidden. Be patient at a good setup, stay alert and wait at least half hour. Other than the typical rabbit calls, I like howling, especially this time of year. Just don't expect yotes to howl back, they usually come in silent. Finally, just be persistent and remember a lot of different things have to come together perfectly just to see one, let alone kill one. Have fun and learn. Watching a good video like Anderson's callin all coyotes is a good idea to get on the right track. Just remember you're not hunting in NE or SD.

Oh yea, get yourself a pair of shooting sticks so you can kill one when it comes in and a cushion to sit comfortably and still on. Yotes are not big targets. Bark like the neighbors dog to stop one thats alerted. Last year we did 6 setups before calling in and killing 3 yotes. Never saw one before that in yote infested areas.

Hey Gus,theres not too many predator callers in here it seems.I find a ton of info in the Predator Masters Forum, look under The Great White North section for info pertaining to our neck of the woods.Good Luck!

cooter said it perfectly the approach is critical and all the coyotes that have come to my call have takin around a half an hour. I use a super screamer jack rabbit/mouse call made by quaker boy. I like it because it has a soft tip that you can change the sound and intensity of the call.

Hey jamie

If most of the yotes your callin take that long to come in 1 of 2 things.Either they come from a long ways away or else your making them timid.

I used to call every day that was callable. Most coyotes will come on a dead run or a good pace when calling correctly. This depends on the ground cover and what kinda terain as well.

If your calling to loud this will make a slow aproach or none at all.If your location is outa place this too will make a slow aproach

90% of the coyotes i call in normaly come within 10 minutes most in 3 or 4 minutes.

This is working great for me this time of year.Howl a couple times.Wait about 3 minutes then use a distress call medium pitch about 4 short grunts.Wait about a minute then let it rip realy fast and shake the call like it just got grabbed again for 30 seconds.Wait 10 minutes if no coyotes try your way then.If there is a yote that has not been called before in hearing distence he will be there within those 10 minutes.More often this time of year you will get multiples to come in and once you shoot DO NOT GIVE UP grab the call right away and give a couple more short light grunts and get ready again. If 2 or more came in and you only got 1 lots of times they will come back looking for there mate or else others will be closing in

If the 1 that gets away leaves the area but barks back or howls you need to give a short howl a couple times then again rip into the call like the animal once again was just grabed but not to loud. Not always but lots of times it will return but slowly and very alert so keep movement to little or none

I have a friend that lives in glencoe and is always looking for a place to shoot more yotes, let me know if you want him to do it for ya, he is pretty effective, thus his spots that he normally hunts dont have any more so he needs new spots..

Can't help ya with trapping em around the gut pile, but youre gonna need some patience to shoot em. If the location is secluded enough and they are comfortable you might kill one late or early in the day. Otherwise, pick a moonlit night with some snow and wait em out. Try calling in the general area, but not right by the cow. Another option is too try to drive a vehicle withing shining distance to the cow after dark. They will sometimes tolerate that more than you sneaking in. You better shoot straight on that first attempt though.

I'm familiar with the dying rabbit call but how do you make the howling call? Do you just use your voice or is there an actual call that produces the howl?

Weapons, is a 30.06 too much gun? Its either that or my 12 gauge, where you'd have to get them in pretty close...

Time of day, do any of you ever have luck during the day or is it strictly a full moon hunt?

There are a lot of coyotes around here, it might be fun to try.
