Mozilla Firefox Web Browser

hanson

Question

OK guys-

This is off topic from fishing but we all have to use a web browser to access FishingMinnesota so I thought I'd pass this along.

I had completely reloaded my computer a couple months ago due to pop-ups, slow internet speed, etc. I was having a ton of problems. The reload worked great up until a week ago. I have no idea what I clicked or what HSOforum did me in but I was back in pop-up city this week.

So I installed and ran Spybot to kill off the spyware & adware. Even after running spybot, things were still pretty slow.

I caught myself saying, "I wish I had a Macintosh." a number of times the other night. I've never had an internet problem using my ma's IMac.

I had heard about Mozilla Firefox somewhere, so decided to give that a shot first before doing a reload on the entire computer again. Guess what? I have yet to have a pop-up tonight and every internet page I've loaded has come up faster than with Internet Explorer.

So far, so good! Fingers are crossed that this solves a bunch of my problems.

Anybody else with experience good or bad with Firefox??

I've used Firefox before but got rid of it. I visit a lot of industry websites that are designed specifically for IE and Firefox can't handle the asp's and some JAVA applets. The thing I like about Firefox is that the hackers don't bother trying to figure out how to break it, they pretty much target IE.

A mac??!!! shocked.gif Sorry couldn't resist... Never used one so what do I know.. grin.gif

I'm running the latest issue of XP with the SP2 added. Using Netscape 7.2 as my browser. I upgraded my browser about 4 months ago (?) and have yet to see a pop-up. In fact, 7.2 actually keeps track of how many get blocked. I'm up to 349 and counting. Page loads are nice and fast (DSL) and no annoying pop-ups....

When I had done the reinstall awhile back, I installed a pop-up blocking tool bar (can't remember who's it was) and it kept track of how many pop-ups were blocked. I made it up to 117 or so and then the **** hit the fan the other day. That was with Internet Explorer.

The other thing I've noticed is I haven't gotten these 'Messenger Service' dialogue boxes that used to pop up randomly all the time.

Like I said, fingers are crossed!!

I have been running Firefox for about 4 months now. IE was getting bogged down and S...L...O...W... I also like not having the ten gazillion popups. I thought that I was going to have to start fresh on the hard drive, but Firefox saved the day.

I was using it and it appears to speed things up a lot. But I got frustrated with there being no working spell check that was compatible. Sounds like there is one now Eh?

Is this a spell check from Monzilla? I did see they were working on one a while back.

The browser was a handy deal, liked the tabs feature and the file system much better then IE.

I did have problem with the Java and my chat forum application stopped working. Every time I tried to enter a chat forum it crashed the browser on me...ticked me off so I pulled the plug on the Foxfire.

I just might need to try it again if the spell check is up and the bugs are out of it now?

http://spellbound.sourceforge.net The spell check works good. The install process is a little fuzzy, if I had to do it again it would come back to me. This should get you on your way.

Click on the download. That'll get you to another page. Click on 1. "SpellBound extensions" and download it and install.

On the same page download "Windows SpellBound libraries" and install through here. On FireFox goto tools/extensions/options, a box will pop up and to select the English language. During this process you'll get the yellow banner on top the page asking for permission.

DON'T DELETE IE!

You will need it on occasion when firefox does not agree with the site. You will also need it to update Windows and Microsoft stuff. Microsoft will not be compatible with firefox for upgrades (slick how they do that, huh?). Also, Macafee does not seem to like FF for upgrades.

Otherwise, FF is GREAT, but don't dump the IE

Funny to read this post as I just downloaded and currently running Firefox for just a few hours and so far so good. I've been wanting to for a while now and decided to give it a try. It loads pages faster than IE I've noticed. No pop-ups, although I didn't have pop-ups with IE after installing Google's Toolbar which I wish they had for Firefox. Really is slick to use for searching the web and also the current page you are reading. Just been bumping around to various sites the past hour and letting it find the plug-ins I need for browsing. Works good! I really like the 'tabs' feature as well since it removes the clutter from the task bar that you would normally encounter with multiple IE sessions running. smile.gif

Google and Mozilla have a deal I guess and there is a built in google box at the top right. Can do a search from there and avoid typing the google site in.

Trivia: I guess Mozilla co was the maker of the/an original browser that eventually became netscape.

Also a really cool feature is the Tools/options that lets you delete things like history, cache, cookeis all quickly and neatly and even all at once if you like. Try doing that effectively with IE. wink.gif

The google toolbox in Firefox is handy, but not as complete as the downloadable toolbar for IE where you could highlight certain words on a page or even search for a word within a document. I found it more useful than I thought I would.

I was always a Netscape/Mozilla user until it seemed that IE was pushing it out of the internet and it became more difficult to view certain sites correctly as IE became the "standard". The last version had the tabs on the top and I liked that feature, but it just couldn't load pages that IE could and plug-ins were always an issue. In the short time I've used Firefox I really like it.
