Driving into work this morning, getting light in the east, clear sky, beautiful morning, was wishing I was out in a deer stand bowhunting. To top it off I saw a couple of small bucks crossing the road. Buts its 'I owe, I owe, its off to work I go'. But Thursday and Friday I WILL be in my deer stand. Good luck to all of you that are out!

Hey mudman, if you can do it, try sitting in the stand longer, maybe till 10 or so, last year on the 5th of Nov. I shot an 11 pointer at 9:50 am, cruising the ridge looking for love, that was the 3rd buck I had come by me that morning, none were before 8:00 am. Better yet, sit there all day if you can, those guys should be pretty much moving all day long about now. As long as you are seeing does, you should be in a good area.

where do you hunt?

, and I have seen does and bucks sunday and monday but they weren't chasing yet?

They have to be by now I would think. But my memory tells me that it was the 3rd week in NOV for the best.

I hunt in Sogn, about 7 miles south of Cannon Falls, the week leading up to the opener is always the best for me it seems, although I don't hunt the property again until the second season. However, I can remember specifically two occasions where I have missed large bucks on the friday before opener (don't ask) and last year my cousin and I each had bucks within range on the same day, I had only a doe tag left and his was a basket 8. I always thought by the 3rd week the post rut phase was on but that is a different area than you. I would think the next two days should be prime time pretty much all over. Just get out there!

I was out this morning and missed the first buck I have ever shot at! He was a bit bigger than a basket buck-probably 2 1/2 year old deer. Here is the kicker....He was seriously about 5 yrds from the base of the tree I was in. Everyone says to aim low in this situation and I guess they are right considering the fact that I shot over him. I am glad I missed clean! Rookie mistake I guess.

Rost

I never aim low. I shoot for where I want the arrow to go.

I have had 2 does that I shot right below me.

Aim for the Middle of the back, You have a 95% chance of that deer going nowhere and dropping on the spot. You will either spine them or go into the lungs or heart. I think that is one of the best shots other than 10yds broadside

THats Just My Opinion!

I agree with mudman, at that distance aim for just below the spine. There is no way that your arrow will hit that high if you aimed right on. Try practicing a few of those same shots so you get a feel for where your bow shoots at that yardage. Maybe you flinched? We all miss and we all hate it! but that's hunting.

I hate to be the guy who disagrees but Rost is right that when deer are close, and you're in a stand, generally you aim low when bow hunting.

Here's why... As an example my first pin is set at 0-20 yards...when I shoot on the same plane as my target..ie. the ground I will be a bit high at 0-10 yards but here's why I don't care. Once you get up in a tree and you take that shot at a deer 3 steps off your tree your arrow is traveling almost straight down...in the direction of gravity...therefore gravity does not act on it other than in the direction of travel. This means that the compensation of your sights used to raise your aim up high enough so that at ground level a 20 yard shot drops consistently into the bullseye will in turn be high when shooting nearly straight down.

An easier more Edisonlike method of looking at it. Say you can and decided to hunt 40 yards up in a tree...bare with me. If a deer is standing next to your tower of a tree and you decide to shoot it, will you use your 40 yard pin? Heck no, you end up hitting the ground next to the deer...waaaaay high.

All of this of course depends on the speed of your arrow and it is best that each archer practice from a treestand and understand his or her bow for these circumstances. My general rule is deer under 20 yards I use the first pin and always, always aim at the vitals...do not make this your rule until you know your setup acts the same way. At 5-10 yards my arrow will not enter the side of the animal but rather near the spine traveling downward into the vitals.

Try it out, it's true and works. I threaded the needle on a black bear last year at 3 yards quartering into me. Shot the 3-4" slot between the shoulder blade and spine...went 50 yards. That cannot be done unless you know how your setup acts at close proximity.
